Jackson To Stand At Highlands

Jackson heads for Highlands

Jackson - Gr1 Investec Cape Derby 2012

Jackson beats Variety Club in the Gr1 Investec Cape Derby

Following Brett Crawford’s advice Jackson’s owners have decided that it’s time to retire him from racing. He hasn’t been himself since a setback around Durban July time in 2012 and despite some gallant efforts at distances short of his ideal target since then, he has not been at his best. His well-being is of paramount importance.

After the Met he again showed distress so Ian and Jack decided to call it a day and let him progress to a higher calling. Highlands have bought 25% of the shares for the right to stand him alongside his illustrious sire Dynasty. Ian and Jack are keeping 5 shares each and we have been given the honour of syndicating him. Shareholders are: Ascot, Boland, Cheveley, Craig Carey/Wayne Kieswetter, Daytona, Drakenstein, Favour, Gary Player, Hassen Adams, Klawervlei, Maine Chance, Normandy, Patricia Devine Inv, Rennie Price, Sandown, Delma Sherril, Varsfontein, – and we have the last two shares in process.

Jackson will be moved to Highlands next week and we are taking bookings now. Jackson is a magnificently made, good legged, big, strong, real quality horse and he is endowed with the most superb temperament. Apart from an internal problem which has never been fully understood, he has had no soundness issues. I stood next to him on the beach last Friday and was awestruck at what a great looking horse he is and at his superb temperament. Just like his dad he doesn’t waste energy being silly. He loves attention and laps up all of the admiration he got from the large press contingent that came to admire him. Much has been written and said about him, and with good reason.

Jackson has breathtaking class and movie star looks and he has a regal pedigree. His 2nd dam is 6/8ths sibling to Sail From Seattle (sire of the 2014 Cape Guineas winner Elusive Gold). This is the family of champion American sire Smart Strike, and his own brother, Mauritzfontein’s ill-fated Strike Smartly (three parts brothers to quadruple Champion and Horse of the Year, Dance Smartly). Family of the champions Sky Classic, Regal Classic, Grey Classic, Classy ‘N Smart etc.

Of course all of this leads to a host of wonderful mating possibilities for Jackson. Please take a look at Karel Miedema’s report attached. The handicappers allocation of 57kgs to him in the Durban July signified the most weight any 3yo had ever been asked to carry in that race. I called the handicappers and challenged their view given that this was 6kgs more than Big City Life and 2kgs more than Bold Silvano had to shoulder and 1kg more than Irish Flame had to carry when he ran 2nd as his sire Dynasty’s first crop 3yo Horse of The Year. They stood their ground on the basis that he was in their view “by far the best classic horse they have seen race in SA for many years” and they “weren’t taking any chances”. He earned that reputation by winning 3 Gr1 races. He is only one of three horses ever to beat dual Horse of the Year Variety Club.

Jackson won 6 races including 3 Gr1 races and was placed in 3 more Gr1 races including the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (twice) for career earnings of R2.366m and has a Merit Rating of 118 (previously his international scale was 124). He ran 2nd in the Gr2 Diadem despite having been rolled soon after the start, proving that he has speed and stamina. Please visit our website to see his races and a gallery of pictures.
