A Legacy of Mambo

Kingmambo - The Legacy Lives On

Kingmambo

Kingmambo (Mr Prospector-Miesque)

The influence of the great stallion Kingmambo continues to be felt in major races throughout the world.

The son of Mr Prospector was also to the fore in South Africa over the weekend, when promising young sire, Mambo In Seattle, had his fifth first crop winner in the form of debut winner, Revealed, while another promising Kingmambo horse, Ashaawes, was responsible for Saturday’s Gr3 Champagne Stakes winner, Priceless Jewel.  Another Kingmambo son, Ideal World, has also made a promising start to his stud career with his first 2yos in 2013-2014, and in fact was the leading sire, by aggregate, at the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale.

Another son of Kingmambo, Parade Leader, is the broodmare sire of one of the Cape’s most exciting prospects for the 2014-2015 racing season in the form of Gr3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery hero, Kingvoldt.  Kingvoldt apart, Parade Leader also left his mark in this country with the Grade 1 winners Pierre Jourdan, Rudra, and champion filly Laverna.

Lemon Drop Kid

Kingmambo has enjoyed a fine trot with a number of his sire sons during 2014.  Japanese Champion King Kamehameha apart, Kingmambo’s most consistently successful sire son has been Lemon Drop Kid.  A former Champion and Grade 1 winner at two, three and four, Lemon Drop Kid has enjoyed big success this year, with his offspring winning Group/Graded races in both Britain and North America.

He was also represented by his seventh Gr1 winner when daughter Somali Lemonade (who incidentally hails from the same family as former local sire Waldoboro) landed the Gr1 Diana Stakes back in July.  Lemon Drop Kid, who currently ranks sixth on the US general sires list, has been represented by nine stakes winners in 2014, and his runners include the talented Cannock Chase – winner of Royal Ascot’s Group 3 Tercentenary Stakes.

Hangover Kid

The stallion, himself a three parts brother to Mambo In Seattle, is also the sire of 2014 Gr2 Bowling Green Handicap winner, Hangover Kid (who is out of a mare by former SA sire Rakeen). Lemon Drop Kid, a horse with a superb pedigree, is enjoying increasing success as a broodmare sire.  To date, top class performers produced by Lemon Drop Kid mares include multiple Group 1 winner Elusive Kate (Elusive Quality) as well as 2014 Gr1 winner Lochte (Medaglia D’Oro).

Another son of Kingmambo to do well this year is the Group 1 winning 2yo Thewayyoure, whose first Northern Hemisphere crop are now three. His first NH runners include impressive Gr2 UAE Derby winner, Toast Of New York as well as the stakes performers, Hug And A Kiss and Secret Admirer. Thewayyouare also ended the 2013-2014 Southern Hemisphere racing season as New Zealand’s top first crop sire, by prize money, over such well known and promising young stallions as Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) and I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit).

Archipenko

Archipenko

The former Mike de Kock trained Archipenko, who has claims to being one of Kingmambo’s best bred sons, has also made a pleasing start to his stud career. The Lanwades Stud based stallion’s first crop of 3yos include the Gr3 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes winner, Madam Chiang, as well as the promising stakes winning filly, Lady Penko.

Archipenko, the former Gr1 QE II Cup winner, has had just one runner in South Africa to date – useful winner Kingston Mines.

King Kamehameha, who has already been Champion Sire in Japan twice, has had another good season in 2014. Currently second on the Japanese sires list, King Kamehameha has had ten stakes winners this year, including Gr2 winner, To The World – runner up in the Gr1 Satsuki Sho (2000 Guineas).

Alexandros

Alexandros

Kingmambo is also sire of the promising young stallion, Alexandros, who currently rates as one of France’s leading first crop sires. A former high-class 2yo himself, Alexandros is out of a mare by South African based sire, King Of Kings, and is thus yet another high-class performer bred on the famed Kingmambo/Sadler’s Wells cross.

One of Kingmambo’s best sire sons was former 2000 Guineas winner, King’s Best, Champion Sire in France in 2010, King’s Best is the broodmare sire of the very exciting French Group winning 2yo this season, Ervedya.

King’s Best, like Kingmambo himself, has enjoyed superb results when mated to Sadler’s Wells line mares. Group 1 winners sired by King’s Best out of descendants of Sadler’s Wells include Epsom Derby/Arc de Triomphe winner, Workforce, top sprinter and promising local sire King’s Apostle, and Group 1 Lockinge Stakes hero, Creachadoir, as well as French Derby runner up, Best Name.

Henrythenavigator

Henrythenavigator

Another 2000 Guineas sired by Kingmambo, Henrythenavigator, made a fair start to his stud career when represented by Group 1 winners in his first two crops – but he did receive large books of outstanding mares in his first years at stud.

Kingmambo, broodmare sire of Drakenstein Stud’s well performed new recruit Duke Of Marmalade, has also made his mark as a broodmare sire.

Not only is Kingmambo the broodmare sire of the Investec Derby winners, Ruler Of The World and Camelot, he is also the damsire of such high-class stakes winners as Super Cool (Australian Cup), Midday (Breeders Cup F&M Turf), Regal Parade (Prix Maurice de Gheest), Gozzip Girl (American Oaks), Gallica (Australian Oaks) and Miss World (Garden City Handicap).

In South Africa, Kingmambo daughters have produced Olympic Owen (Gr3 Protea Stakes) as well as one of the leading 2yo fillies of last season, One Fine Day (Trippi).

A horse with a superb pedigree, (by legendary US sire Mr Prospector out of champion racemare Miesque), Kingmambo has clearly lived up to his illustrious pedigree at stud, and his influence should continue to be felt for years to come.
