Despite the jockey replacement trauma of earlier in the week, SA champion trainer Sean Tarry found comeback jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe in fine fettle after his long break and the experienced Cape heavyweight guided Caralluma to victory in the R85 000 Listed Devon Air Stakes at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.
Due to a lockdown ruling by the NHRA, Tarry was one of the visiting trainers who found himself offsides when engaging his Gauteng-based regulars and he was forced to ‘make do’ with what was available.

But Bernie Fayd’herbe is no ordinary replacement on any given Sunday and Caralluma (7-2), who had won on debut at Turffontein just a fortnight earlier, took over from the tiring pacesetter Trickster to win going away by 4 lengths in a time of 86,49 secs.
Mike de Kock’s Due Diligence started a 16-10 favourite and enjoyed the trip, staying on for second ahead of the red-hot Kotzen yard’s Stella Act (14-1).
Trickster drifted to 8-1 and had to be reshod prior to the race. She ran a modest fourth.
Representing the same sire-breeder-trainer-owner as triumphed in the Gr2 Camellia Stakes at Turffontein 24 hours earlier with Golden Belle, Caralluma will now go for the Golden Slipper and the Thekwini Stakes.
Bred by Klawervlei Stud, the winner is the seventh stakes horse from Pomodoro’s (Jet Master) second crop and is out of the twice winning Kahal mare, Kalanchoe.
A R150 000 Cape Yearling Sale graduate, Caralluma has won both her starts and took her stakes bank to R89 125.
