Cape Fillies Dominate PE Feature

Domeyer & Nel's good weekend

Jockey Aldo Domeyer got the ball rolling on his treble feature weekend winning streak at Fairview on Friday when he rode a powerful finish to get Solana home to win the R150 000 Listed East Cape Oaks.

The Cape fillies always looked superior to the locals and that was the way it panned out – albeit not necessarily in the punter’s favour, with the favourite Entrechat being beaten into third.

Only eight fillies lined up at the 2000m marker and with nobody prepared to go, S’manga Khumalo took the 16-10 Entrechat out to lead after she had fought him for a few strides.

She led all the way into the 400m as an all Drakenstein finish looked to be on the cards as Bernard Fayd’herbe brought Arabian Winter up to challenge her.

While the blues were fighting it out, Aldo Domeyer rode one of his five winners for the weekend as he brought the lesser fancied Solana up the middle and she found her best stride late to win going away by 0,75 lengths in a time of 124,85 secs.

Her trainer Andre Nel also saddled the winner of the Listed Sweet Chestnut Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday and the yard is showing good form.

Arabian Winter stayed on well for second, a half length ahead of Entrechat.

The rest were well beaten.

Bred by La Plaisance Stud, Solana is a daughter of Querari out of the lightly raced four-time winning Jallad mare, Senorita Sol – who also campaigned in the Plattner silks.

Solana took her stakes tally to R187 500 with her third win from just six starts.

She looks decent and with the confidence of her first splash of black type, she should go on from here.
