Top class Sedge! Gavin Smith’s very smart 3yo son of Silvano showed courage and determination when nabbing the older Copper Parade in the final strides to win the R130 000 Listed East Cape Sprint Cup run over 1200m at Fairview on Friday.

Bois De Var was backed into a 19 to 10 favourite in the nine horse field, but he was unable to muster his usual fight as Sedge registered a terrific hat trick of wins, that commenced with a smooth win in the Fairview Merchants at the beginning of February.

Bois De Var would no doubt have been unsettled by having a shoe replaced at the start, and the only other recordable incident was Frosty Magic flyjumping as the rest got away on level terms.

As usual it was Villandry who showed the way, and he led from Sedge and Bois De Var, with Copper Parade and Never Forever further back.

Into the 400m marker Copper Parade moved up and took over from Villandry, as Sedge and Bois De Var joined forces down the middle.

In a thrilling finish Aldo Domeyer  extracted  reserves of strength from deep down, as Sedge collared Copper Parade on the line to win a good race.

Sedge won by a short head in a time of  68.62 secs.

Bois De Var ran his usual game race to run third, just ahead of an eyecatching effort from Act Of Supremeacy who ran on strongly for fourth.

The previously consistent Never Forever was never going well and fell away to second last, while Villandry faded right out to finish over seventeen lengths off the winner.

Sedge appears to relish the straight sprint and has come into his own of late.

The Maine Chance Farms bred son of Silvano cost R250 000 at the National Yearling Sale.He is out out of the unraced Rakeen mare, Shasta Daisy.

A winner of 7 races with 3 places from 13 starts, he took his earnings to R458 875.
