Crabbia Celebrates With His Captain

Champions Season feature sprints beckon for Captain Al gelding

Dean Kannemeyer provided leading international owner Fred Crabbia with a 40th wedding anniversary gift when the progressive 4yo Captain Alfredo beat a decent field to win the R150 000 Listed In Full Flight Handicap at Scottsville on Sunday.

Avontuur-sponsored Anthony Delpech steers Captain Alfredo to an easy win

The opening of a permanent Summerveld satellite base has proven a revelation for the Milnerton based trainer and he and his first-call rider Anthony Delpech once again maintained their top strike rate with a feature double on the Worker’s Day Sunday.

Delpech has gotten to know Captain Alfredo well and after Budapest and Beloved Country had jumped slowly in the 1100m feature, the top freelance rider  had his mount relaxed off a quick pace before letting him go at the 400m.

The talented son of Captain Al loves the Scottsville straight and he showed that he could be a serious factor in the upcoming features as he catapulted clear to beat the year younger favourite, Captain’s Causeway by 1,75 lengths in a time of 61,90 secs.

The Listed Sophomore Sprint winner Ernie stayed on for third, without looking dangerous.

Captured Wind was reported coughing while Flyfirstclass was not striding out. Both finished well downfield.

Captain Alfredo was bred by Highlands and is a son of Captain Al (what a feature weekend he has enjoyed!) out of the five-time winning King Of Kings mare, Zooming Zellie.

He was bought for R750 000 on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 and took his career earnings to R483 563. He has won 7 races with 4 places from 14 starts and this race could be classed as his biggest test to date – he certainly came through with flying colours.
