Game For The Girls

Listed Irridescence Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday

Pure Power

Consistent. The Mike Bass trained Pure Power looks overdue to register a second win and is danger in the Listed Irridescence Stakes

The outstanding Maine Chance stallion Silvano has enjoyed a terrific feature winning streak this season and his smart daughter Vol De Nuit looks the part in Saturday’s R125 000 Listed Irridescence Stakes run over 1500m at Kenilworth. Joey Ramsden’s chestnut flyer is the only two time winner in the event.

The Ramsden yard has powerful representation in the feature events at both Clairwood and Kenilworth on Saturday and they are set for a glorious afternoon in both centres.

Top Sort

Silvano has always been a stallion to be reckoned with but he has come into his own on all fronts this season. After his stunning Gr1 double at Greyville last weekend, his daughter Vol De Nuit looks full value in this slightly less glamorous affair in what is bound to be a wintry Cape Town.

Vol De Nuit is a lovely long striding filly who improved dramatically from her quiet debut on 27 March, to win her next two outings over the Kenilworth 1400m. Her last effort was particularyly pleasing as she lost valuable ground at the start and was bumped, before showing superior courage and raw fight to win a hard fought race.

The second of the Ramsden runners is the Windrush filly Missing Link. The Arc En Ciel product has had three runs and improved nicely to runa length second when her stablemate Vol De Nuit shed her maiden. She ran on very smartly there, and is now all of 4kgs better off . She is ridden by Chris Puller and jumps on the inside of Vol De Nuit at 2.

The National Emblem filly Speed Merchant is still a maiden but improved but improved dramatically last time to go down narrowly to Vol De Nuit in a winner’s race. Speed Merchant is now a kilo better off with Vol De Nuit and likely to be a serious player assuming she benefitted from that experience.

In The Eyes

Glen Kotzen’s Eye Of The Panther showed great fight at her third start when shedding her maiden over the Kenilworth 1400m when beating subsequent runaway winner Chanel Five. The going there was good, but Eye Of The Panther failed to show next time out on heavy ground. The daughter of Eyeofthetiger has over four lengths to make up on Vol De Nuit, and the ground is unlikely to be to her liking on Saturday.

Darling

The Justin Snaith duo of recent maiden winner Darling Moon and the debutante Six Of The Best, will have their supporters amongst Pick Six players. Fred Crabbia owns Darling Moon who took four perfect steps from fourth on debut to win at her last start over the Kenilworth 1200m.

The daughter of Indigo Magic is bound to enjoy the extra 300m on Saturday and ran a good race in yielding going at her second start. She jumps from the best of the draw and it is interesting to see jockey Gavin Lerena making the trip from Gauteng for the Snaiths.

The Hemel ‘N Aarde bred Six Of The Best is a daughter of Jet Master owned by two big men of the game in Ken Truter and Hassen Adams. The betting is probably the best guide as to her prospects and a Listed debut is not something we see often in South Africa. The Snaiths are often bang on target with their first timers and homework ability, so beware!

Bass Duo

Mike Bass has a must include coupling of debut winner Lanner Falcon and the very consistent Pure Power. Pure Power is a consistent Captain Al filly. She went down narrowly when rallying gamely at her last outing in the Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery last time out. Prior to that she was run off her feet when third behind Kitti Cat in the Listed Perfect Promise Sprint.

It may be worth noting that after winning easily on debut, she ran a fair second behind Sea Cat. The latter ran a nice fourth recently in the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship behind Happy Valentine. Pure Power looks like a speed sort, but may just appreciate the ground and warrants consideration.

Lanner Falcon was an easy debut winner at Durbanville over 1000m on 22 May. The daughter of Trippi jumped at any price, but beat Sister Sybil easily under Grant Van Niekerk. It is difficult placing any value on the strength of that field as there are no winners out of there yet. But Lanner Falcon showed maturity and class and she is out of a half sister to an American Gr1 winner and could be just about anything.

Again?

Joey Ramsden has some serious aspirations for a memorable Saturday. With three of the eight runners here, he naturally has a strong hand. We fancy the improving Vol De Nuit to show her ability again by beating the consistent Pure Power and her stablemates Missing Link and Speed Merchant.

The Bass’ debut winner Lanner Falcon is difficult to guage, while Eye Of The Panther could prove some value if adapting to the underfoot conditions.
