A double local billing of Fairview and Greyville offers punters a great opportunity to bury the myth of Friday 13th. After Wednesday’s debacle at Greyville, it may prove prudent to focus on the Fairview afternoon fare.
The R150 000 Listed Lady’s Slipper Stakes heads a tough eight race programme at Fairview. An interesting aspect of the feature is the fact that five of the thirteen runners in the topliner are Sail From Seattle progeny.
Ascot Stud’s Gone West stallion has made a cracking start to his stud career and he produces a variety of progeny that have proven excellent value and with plenty of versatility too.
He has already celebrated a first Gr1 winner in Elusive Gold, who was exported after a dazzling late dash win in the Cape Guineas in December 2013.
Yvette Bremner’s Priceless Sail is our top rated selection and is the only two time winner in the race. She is also a course and distance winner and looks to hold the likes of Hollywoodsunset, Dancing Natasha and Artic Sails.
Justin Snaith won’t have the services of Richard Fourie today, but sends out recent maiden winner Magical Trip, who will be piloted by Robert Khathi.
The Bipot opens in race 1 and this should be a three cornered tussle between Pacyano, Frederick Fox and Seattle Joe. The latter is yet another son of Sail From Seattle, and he showed nice improvement at his last start when turning it on late in the blinkers.
Judpot filly Pipette is way overdue to win a race and she looks to have plenty in her favour in the second race, where she jumps from a good draw with S’manga Khumalo up.
Dorrie Sham’s Chelivan Abbey ran a smart third on debut behid Restless Rose and even though facing older horses, could be the right one in the first of the Pick 6. Sobranie and Fearless Lion look to be good back up.
Gift Funeka and the Shams could strike with a double when Seaclipper attempts to shed his maiden in the fourth.
Poorly drawn, he has improved smartly and may have most to fear from Grant Paddock’s Alpha Male. The son of Spectrum is rumoured to be half alright and this is a rather weak field.
The fifth race is wide open and anything can happen over 2700m in a lowly rated handicap.
Mitch Wiese held a strong hand with a strong three way coupling. The former Mike De Kock filly Ado Annie is threatening to win again, but Jupiter Symphony and Blue Horizon Bay are both scratched.
A nice outsider could be Gavin Smith’s Victorialaine, who enjoys a galloping weight in the hands of the enthusiastic Sean Veale.
The sixth race hosts one of the largest fields of the day, where the classy Murmering Sky jumps from an impossible draw.
Travel Up Front looks much better than a one time winner and has a nice draw and favourable weight to carry. There are many others to consider, including Paddy Kruyer’s former charge La Patineuse, who was highly rated at home in the Cape. Go wide!
The feature is discussed elsewehere.
The final race looks like a typical get out stakes trap. A capacity field goes to post and our top rating shapes in the form of the former Dolfie Maeder trained, Oats.
The Lundy’s Liability gelding has done well in PE and is much better at this class level. Burlaine Forest returns from a 28 week rest, while Casey Novak has battled to regain his better earlier form. At 20 to 1, he may be a nice place bet in the hands of Ryan Curling.
