Very Promising! Lance (Anthony Depech) is a facile winner of the Listed Secretariat Stakes (JC Photos)
The weather delayed R150 000 Listed Secretariat Stakes was run over the 1400m standside track at Turffontein on Sunday and the contest produced yet another impressive looking son of Jet Master. Sean Tarry’s lightly raced Lance won easily under Anthony Delpech, and looks a fellow to be with in the future.
Jet Master has had an astounding feature streak in December, and he clocked up yet another splash of glory here.
With nobody prepared to make the pace, Anthony Delpech grabbed the initiative and dictated things from his 10 draw out front.
Lance was always going well, and despite Louis The King looking dangerous, he led the charge and kicked again to draw clear and win by 3,25 lengths in a time of 83,24 secs.
He started at a rather generous 6 to 1 and beat the well fancied 13 to 10 favourite Louis The King, who could make no impression late.
There was drama immediately after the race when the Clerk Of Scales objected against the Leon Erasmus trained Jimmi Choo.
The Stipes reported:
‘Between the 1000 metre mark and 800 metre mark two lead weights on JIMMI CHOO (M Mienie) (unplaced) became dislodged and fell. As a result of this an objection was lodged by the Clerk of Scales in terms of Rule 66.4 in that Jockey M Mienie, the rider of JIMMI CHOO (unplaced), weighed out at 63.7kg and weighed back in at 62.6kg, a weight differential of 1.1kg. After hearing the evidence, the Objection Board upheld the objection and JIMMI CHOO (M Mienie) was disqualified from the race.’
But Lance looks an exciting and promising youngster with plenty of scope.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms the 3yo son of Jet Master is out of the eight time winning Jallad mare Lyrical Linda. This mare is known to be very close to Maine Chance boss Andreas Jacobs’ heart as she was his first Group 1 winner in South Africa.
Lance sold for R600 000 on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1.
His full brother Legato (Lot 216) was sold on the 2013 Cape Premier Yearling Sale for R1.4 million.
Lance has now won two of his three races after a narrow second on debut.
He took his stake earnings with this winto R163 750.
