Western Winter colt impresses in small field

Joey Ramsden

Joey Ramsden trained the winner

We should not allow the lack of support by Cape trainers to detract from the impressive victory by Joey Ramsden’s Lammerskraal Stud bred Kingvoldt in Saturday’s R125 000 Listed Somerset 1200 at Kenilworth.  With only three raced opponents and three unraced runners, the son of the ill fated triple champion sire Western Winter still looks very promising.

It would be interesting to get a comment from the local trainers’ association and from the racing operator to clarify exactly why the apathy exists towards these juvenile features. There seems to be much the same state of affairs in KZN and if it is not a programming issue, then it can only mean that there just aren’t the horses available.

Bernard Fayd’herbe has ridden Kingvoldt in all three of his starts to date and the heavyweight rider would not have even raised a sweat as he produced the colt at the 300m to glide into the lead effortlessly.

Starting a 13 to 20 favourite, Kingvoldt streaked clear to win by 2,25 lengths in a time of 72,33 secs.

Prince Of Magic ran on well for second, with the Jet Master first timer Master’s Eye outpaced but running on stoutly for third and 4,75 lengths off the winner.

Kingvoldt will no be aimed at the Cape Of Good Hope Nursery on May 10.

Joey Ramsden told Michael Clower: “We haven’t done a lot with him but he is a nice horse and very straightforward. He will go for the Nursery and then the Langerman over 1 500m four weeks later.”

The colt was bought by Newmarket trainer Ed Dunlop as a yearling for a syndicate with a view to his eventually training the horse in England but seemingly the one-way ticket is quite some way off.

Ramsden explained: “Ed has a share in him but there is no point in his taking any of his purchases overseas until they are four.”

The Milnerton trainer paid tribute to former trainer and stipe Gavin Hunter for his part in picking the horse and others, saying: “Gavin did most of the work at the sales. He chose this one and he helped choose Variety Club.”

Kingvoldt is now a winner of 2 of his 3 starts with 1 place and R131 750 in stake earnings.

He possesses a classic Lammerskraal Stud pedigree, being by Western Winter out of the one time winning Parade Leader mare, Red Parade.

Kingvoldt was a R475 000 purchase on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1.

He is owned by the La Grange Racing Syndicate (nominee: Gaynor Rupert).

Despite the limited opposition, Kingvoldt looks likely to develop into a very smart sort in time.
