The high-riding Lyle Hewitson maintained his stranglehold on the SA champion jockey title race when he showed confidence and great pace judgement by leading all the way on Redberry Lane.

The daughter of Western Winter enjoys it up front and strode out well to gain a 1,75 length over stablemate Desert Rhythm (S’manga Khumalo) with London Secret (Chase Maujean) a further 1,50 lengths back in third.

The winner’s time was 97,85 secs.

There was drama at the start when Dame Kelly unseated apprentice Luke Ferraris , while the tardy starter Brigtnumberfive lost ten lengths.

Redberry Lane has been a consistent placegetter (she has run 7 places) and this was only her second win from 14 starts. She took her earnings to R324 025.

Owned and bred by Lammerskraal Stud, she gave Western Winter (Gone West) his second feature success of the weekend after Fresnaye won the Listed Stormsvlei Mile at Kenilworth 24 hours earlier.

Redberry Lane is out of the top-class Strawberry Lane (Jallad), who has produced the likes of Guineas winner Solo Traveller and a host of other winners.

Mike de Kock was the top trainer on the day with three winners.
