Molly: Let’s Get Behind Laff

So many in the racing industry will be both shocked and upset to learn that popular presenter and trainer Paul Lafferty has fallen ill, writes Dave Mollett.

Racing is full of interesting characters and Laff  is one of them. In his TV appearances he brings a much-needed lighthearted approach to a sport many take too seriously.

This season’s performances by Harry’s Son are ample proof ‘Laff’ knows his oats in that profession – although he would be the first to admit he’s a long way from the big league of Messrs De Kock, Snaith and Tarry.

One of the notable aspects of racing is how people involved in the sport rally around those who are sidelined because of health issues.

This has been evident with Nico Kritsiotis (kidney replacement) and myself (knee replacement) and I was overwhelmed by the support I received, particularly from two leading owners.

I am certain there will be the same response to “Laff’s” health problem.

There is a golf day at Mount Edgecombe on Wednesday, which I’m sure will be well attended, but Phil Georgiou, Laff’s close friend, is organising the fund to pay for the medical expenses.

“We would love it if people could pledge to the cause anytime,” said Phil.

Having been brought up by gritty Irish parents, one can expect Laff to fight this setback tooth and nail and racing fans countrywide will wish him a swift return to the racecourse.
