Following the spate of incidents at training centres in the Western Cape, Phumelela’s Racing Executive Patrick Davis advised the Sporting Post that the following remedial measures have been implemented with immediate effect:-

  • Stricter control at access and egress points including displaying identification without exception upon entry
  • Patrols within precincts will be increased
  • Kenilworth Security Manager and Supervisors will make more random and frequent visits to sites including at night and over weekends – this will include regular hostel inspections to ensure only those entitled to be on site are there.
  • Trainers have been requested to ensure that new employees are issued with the necessary accreditation and that accreditation is returned to security staff if staff should leave their employment
  • Furthermore trainers have been requested to keep security informed of any changes to their respective staff complement
  • The Security Supervisors have been furnished with the contact details of resident trainers and a land line is available to contact the relevant party/parties in cases of emergency

He stated, “In the longer term, we have retained the services of an independent advisor to assess our current security arrangements and make recommendations for improvements – this will include the possible option of taking security back in-house.”

“In the meantime, we will be monitoring the performance of our contractors very closely to ensure they deliver what they’ve undertaken to do,” he concluded.
