Up And Away

All’s well with Nationals.
Average and median prices up, more big prices, and a strong middle market. Foreign money, and lots of local big spenders. When the buyers admit it’s hard to buy a nice yearling, then the sale is a success. No question.

Twenty-one yearlings went for R2m or more, almost twice as many as last year which had a dozen highflyers.

Just over 400 yearlings found a new home, averaging R347k, up from R298k in 2013.

The median price followed suit, up 20% from R200k to R240k.

When split by sex, the colt’s median went from 230k to 260k, fillies from 180k to 200k.

 Silvano colt lot 48

The top-priced colt, a Silvano full brother to J&B Met winner Martial Eagle, sold for R3.75 million

Six yearlings broke the R2m barrier, five of them colts.

Top price was R3.75m for a Silvano full brother to J&B Met winner Martial Eagle from Wilgerbosdrift. Successful bidder was Tony Millard, on a flying visit from Hong Kong. The successful trainer also got the third highest priced lot, a R2.4m Captain Al half brother to Master Of My Fate, consigned by Varsfontein. The youngster’s dam is champion filly Promisefrommyheart, from that unstoppable Soho Secret female line.

Squashed in-between the Millard purchases was a R2.8m Dynasty colt, for which John Freeman signed the ticket. Consigned by Highlands, the eye-catching youngster is from an American female line tracing to a bunch of sires including Key To The Kingdom and Key To The Mint.

Three yearlings made R2m, two colts and a filly. The latter was secured as a future broodmare for a new entrant in the breeding-ranks, Ridgemont Stud. Consigned by Klipdrif on behalf of Team Valor’s Barry Irwin, the Western Winter filly is out of highlass Jet Master mare She’s On Fire, from the female line of champion Devon Air.

Making it a total of three of the six top prices, John Freeman was the successful bidder on the two R2m colts. One a Western Winter half brother to champion Captain’s Lover and her Gr1 sister Ebony Flyer, from Klipdrif selling on behalf of Team Valor. The other a Dynasty colt from Cheveley Stud, the dam a stakes winning half sister to champion Argonaut & Gr1 siblings.
