Var Speedster Shows The Need

Back to better form

The Joey Ramsden trained Var gelding Tar Heel produced an electrifying show of pure pace to streak to an impressive victory in the R150 000 Need For Speed Sprint at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Anton  Marcus jumped the 2014 Listed Somerset 1200 winner from his 1 gate and he was never headed as he charged down the inside rail in the 1000m 3yo non black-type race to score a facile win by 3,75 lengths  in a time of 58,95 secs.

Dennis Drier’s recent maiden winner Shamrock Skipper caught the eye when coming out of the pack to bank the second cheque, ahead of the ever-present Mystical Twilight, who stayed on well for third.

Tar Heel was scoring his first success this term and made it 3 wins with 3 places from  9 starts for stakes of R252 100.

Bred by Professor Ian Sanne, Tar Heel topped the  inaugural Cape Thoroughbred Sales (Johannesburg) Ready To Run Sale held at the Inanda Club in Sandton on 31 October 2014.

He is the fourth foal of the Kabool mare Egyptian Reign, and is thus a half-brother to Gr2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner Go Indigo.

Tar Heel is a nickname for the U.S. state of North Carolina and its inhabitants. It is also a term of endearment for the University of North Carolina athletic teams, students, alumni, and fans.
