Mike Stewart – fined

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Cape Town on 3 November 2016, Trainer J M T Stewart was charged with a contravention of Rule 10.5.16.1, in that certain used needles and syringes seized by Officials of the National Horseracing Authority at Mr Stewart’s Racing Stables in Noordhoek, on 24 May 2016, were found, upon analysis, to contain, inter alia, Phenylbutazone, a Class 1, Schedule 7, prohibited substance.

Mr Stewart pleaded guilty to the charge and was found guilty of the charge.

In consideration of a penalty, the Inquiry Board took into account the mitigating circumstances put forward by Mr Stewart’s legal representative and imposed a R40,000.00 fine, of which R30,000.00 is suspended for a period of 3 years, provided that Mr Stewart is not charged with and found guilty of a similar charge during that period.
