Mile contest set for a cracker with a variey of stars lining up

The final field for the R600,000 Peermont Emperors Palace Gr2 Charity Mile to be run at Turffontein on 1 November was announced on Wednesday at a function at Emperors Palace.

Geoff Woodruff holds an ace hand with five runners that includes last season’s  Triple Crown hero Louis The King.

Log-topping multiple champion jockey Piere  Strydom is an interesting booking for the ride on the son of Black Minnaloushe who has a big chance of getting back to winning ways on his home turf.

But he has drawn badly at 17, which will not be a major positive.

Trainer Corne Spies is enjoying a huge season and he throws punters a curved ball with Gr2 Emerald Cup winner Tommy Gun in the mix. The son of Sail From Seattle will have the experts debating as he goes a mile for the first time in his career.

Cape trainer Mike Bass has had a terrific start to his Highveld campaign and he pushes the envelope with the former Garth Puller-trained Midnight Run, a consistent 1200m specialist, who steps up to a mile, but has drawn very poorly.

Robbie Sage will be hoping that his regular jockey Gunter Wrogemann will bounce back in time from his recent injury to partner the fast progressing Judpot gelding Sovereign Mint, who makes his big league debut off 54,5kgs with a  handy 4 draw.
