American Horse of the Year Gun Runner went out in a blaze of glory under Florent Geroux at Gulfstream Park on Saturday when he won the $16 million Pegasus World Cup in impressive style.

The son of Candy Ride (Arg) – who stands at Lane’s End for $80,000 – now heads to Three Chimneys to commence his own stud career off five straight Gr1 wins.

“It’s just a very emotional time,” said Gun Runner’s trainer Steve Asmussen. “For him to come through like he did today, overcome the draw, I’m so proud of him.

“He’s a dream come true. He’s just a special individual. This memory will be with us forever.”

With the $7 million winner’s share of the world’s richest purse in racing, Gun Runner moved past California Chrome  into second on the all-time earnings list with $15,988,500. He trails only Arrogate, who beat him in last year’s Dubai World Cup and retired with $17,422,600 in earnings.
