Drakenstein Stud’s Philanthropist was represented by his first South African winner from his first local crop on Sunday when his 2yo son Good To Give made a winning debut at Greyville.
Good To Give (Anton Marcus) is an impressive debut winner
Bred by Highlands Farm, Good To Give prevailed by a length from more experienced runner Ocean Drive South. The colt (who is inbred to the great mare Grey Flight) stopped the clock for the 1000m trip in 59.24 and Good To Give looks a really nice sort in the making.
Trained by Charles Laird and owned by Ingrid and Markus Jooste, Good To Give was a R700 000 buy from last year’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
His sire Philanthropist was a high class racehorse, whose six career victories included the G3 Queens County Handicap.
The chestnut, a son of one of Roberto’s best sire sons in Kris S, is one of three graded winners produced by the Mr Prospector mare Hidden Reserve –Reload (G3 Canadian Turf Hcp, G3 Tampa Bay Stakes) and Defer (G3 Laurel Futurity) being the others.
Runner up in the G2 Demoiselle Stakes and a four time winner of over $200 000, Hidden Reserve is a full sister to G1 winner and millionaire Educated Risk and a half sister to champion and G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Inside Information.
The latter, a member of North America’s Racing Hall Of Fame, won 14 of 17 outings and was North America’s Champion Older Female in 1995. At stud, Inside Information (Private Account) went on to produce multiple G1 winner Smuggler (Unbridled) –USA’s Champion 3YO Filly of 2005.
This is the family of leading sires Sovereign Dancer (whose sons include Preakness Stakes winners Gate Dancer and Louis Quatorze), What A Pleasure (Champion Sire in USA in 1975 and 1976) and former SA leading 2yo sire National Assembly, as well as the once defeated Horse Of The Year, and breed shaping sire, Native Dancer.

Another top class member of this family is former South African champion Majmu, who was the country’s champion 2yo filly of 2014, while yet another prominent member of this family is G2 Pennsylvania Derby hero Gone Astray, who was one of North America’s Leading First Crop Sires in 2015.
Philanthropist has more than lived up to his superb bloodlines at stud. North America’s Leading Synthetic Sire in 2014, the son of Kris S’s small first Canadian crop included the champions Pender Harbour and Phil’s Dream (whose wins included the Gr1 Nearctic Stakes), with subsequent stakes winners including Bear It’s Time, Eff Bee Eye, Grace Phil, Rexton, and Run In Aruba.
Philanthropist, who was second on North America’s Leading Synthetic Sires in 2015, is also the sire of ill-fated Hippolytus, runner up in one of Canada’s greatest races –the Queen’s Plate.
Philanthropist has 11 lots on offer at this week’s March Yearling Sale- including a filly out of a daughter of Giant’s Causeway and Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Burst (Lot149), a filly from the great Fall Aspen family (Lot 49), and a filly, whose winning dam, by Horse Of The Year Rock Of Gibraltar, is from the family of classic winning fillies Aquarelliste and Cape Verdi (Lot 82).
