Piere Strydom Injury Update

World Cup Night Out Of The Question

Piere Strydom

Piere Strydom – compound fracture

After falling from Louis Goosen charge, Winter Breeze after the pull up of race 5 at the Vaal on Thursday, 11 February 2016, jockey Piere Strydom suffered a concussion and broken collar bone and has been out of action ever since.

While he had hoped to be back in the saddle 6 weeks after the fall, Piere has recently been advised that he will be out of action longer than anticipated, taking him out of contention for riding Harry’s Son in the forthcoming Dubai Turf on World Cup night.

‘Striker’ spoke to the Sporting Post to say that “It’s the fourth time I’ve broken my collar bone and I thought ‘oh well, it’s just six weeks and then I can start riding work and move on’. I was hoping that I might just make the World Cup meeting, but have been told that there’s no chance and I mustn’t even consider it. I’ve suffered a compound fracture which means it’s not just the clavicle, the whole shoulder has been affected and because the injury is a bit more complicated than we originally thought, it will take longer to recover.”

“The clavicle is healing nicely. I’ve taken off the sling and am trying to move and be as active as possible without it, but at the moment there’s not a lot of mobility and my range of movement is compromised. I can only get my arm to shoulder height, but no higher. That is obviously a concern, but everything else is healing nicely, and last Thursday was only 4 weeks since the fall, so I mustn’t be ridiculous. I am going to the physio and we will have a better idea of where we stand in the next 2 to 3 weeks.”

Harry's Son

Harry’s Son – seen winning the Gauteng Guineas

“There are some big features coming up in April and then Harry’s Son has been invited to the Gr1 Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin on 1 May and I wouldn’t like to miss that. A couple of years back I went for JJ The Jet Plane and the KrisFlyer International Sprint and we won that, so Sha Tin is a good hunting ground for me.”

We wish Striker a speedy recovery.
