Piere Strydom Leads Charity Charge

Jockeys Support ECHCU

It’s a two day racing festival at Fairview !

It is one of PE’s biggest racing weekends of the year ! With a double header on the 12th and 13th May 2017, there has never been a better excuse to visit the Friendly City.

In the same way as Cadbury’s Top Deck combines two of what you love best with white and milk chocolate, PE’s forthcoming racing weekend offers the East Cape’s best of both with a poly meeting on Friday – with the World Sports Betting EC Poly Challenge as its headline feature – and a full card of turf action on Saturday, with headline features of the Listed World Sports Betting East Cape Derby and Listed Dahlia Plate on Saturday.

Better yet, to mark the event, PE welcomes back one of its best exports after the VW, and racing fans will be thrilled with the news that Striker Strydom is planning a busman’s holiday and combining a catch-up with family and friends with riding both of the PE cards.

A mini racing festival PLUS one of SA’s biggest racing stars EQUALS cause for a celebration, so to mark the occasion (and just coz he’s an all-round great guy), Piere is pledging R500 for every winner, R300 for every second and R200 for every third place he rides over the two days to the East Cape Horse Care Unit.

As a happiness shared is a happiness doubled, Piere has issued a challenge to everyone – individuals or companies – to match him and help ensure that the horses entertaining us over the weekend can assist in supporting their less fortunate friends and help him raise as much as possible for this very worthy cause.  Piere has been joined by Greg Cheyne, Callan Murray and Craig Zackey.  The weekend’s headline sponsor, World Sports Betting, are already on board and they have already been joined by a number of fantastic supporters, but there is always room for more ! Anyone corporates who would like to join are asked to submit their company logo for a special Computaform recognition page as a thank you from Piere for your generosity and assistance in making this happen.

ECHCU logoYour support will be going to help the local East Cape Horse Care Unit, which is run by, appropriately, Megan Hope. Originally established in 2006 to deal with the plight of township animals, the ECHCU has grown to be an invaluable pillar of the local community, offering support wherever they are needed and assisting with everything from routine vaccinations and hoof care to removing carcasses off the road and the all important outreach work to help needy rural equines.

Like all charities, the ECHCU gets no Government funding and relies entirely on donations, but they have turned resourcefulness into a fine art and make sure that every penny is turned over three times. The local racing fraternity has always been a staunch support and Dorrie Sham and team do an excellent job at their annual charity auction on Algoa Cup weekend, but with winter on the way, it is wonderful to see racing going above and beyond to assist the ECHCU again this coming weekend. Every penny helps and is most sincerely appreciated (and allocated with the greatest of care).

The sum is always worth more than the parts and if everyone gives a little, in the end, our horses have a lot. In short, there has never been a better reason to support one of South Africa’s friendliest racing centres. So pencil it in. Hell, throw away the pencil and just put it down in permanent ink and come down and join in.

If anyone would like to pledge support, find out more or just come down and join in the fun, please contact [email protected]
