Ready To Run Gallops raise the tempo

Ready To Run Gallops

There’s only one racehorse sale in the world that has the luxury of a panel of judges to share their thoughts with would-be customers on the best prospects in the catalogue.

Seven years ago, the Summerhill team conceived the concept of a panel of the nation’s leading horsemen to perform this function, and Thursday saw another armada of these gifted gentlemen winding their way to Hartford House for the annual pre-Gallops award ceremony and dinner.

While Mike de Kock and Jehan Malherbe were missing in action at the Tattersall’s sale in the UK, “big” Joey Ramsden was back (did we know it!) and while the average age was down a bit, there was still more than 200 years of collective experience at the main table.

These are some of the industry’s most “in-demand” personalities, they’re as busy as hell, and it’s a compliment to the occasion that they sacrifice their time gratuitously for the benefit of those who live by their counsel.

Of course, there are some among them who’ve “supped with the devil” in their time, so sitting down to the culinary pleasures of a Jackie Cameron feast, is something of a “cleansing” ritual. That, and the annual fashion upgrade in their personal apparel, almost makes the trip compelling.

It’s a measure of these men and it probably explains their life achievements, that whatever they get up to and however late they get to bed, when they get down to graft at the opening bell, its heads down till the last horse gets over the line.

That’s why so many stay for the post-gallops interviews, and it’s why the Tellytrack ratings soar to the levels they do when the whole show goes on the “loop”.

The idea is to get their thoughts on the top colts and the top fillies respectively for next year’s Ready To Run Cup, though a couple of them, (in a draft of this depth,) found it difficult to limit their choices to just three each.

So we gave them a bit of “rope” this time, and some took the liberty of adding a couple of “spares” to their list, just so they could cover themselves next year.
