Rider Cup: Hometown Victory

Highveld Hawks fail in bid to make it three wins

The KZN Falcons lifted the New Turf Carriers Inter-Provincial Rider Cup trophy for the first time  at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

The popular jockey interprovincial clash produced a tight tussle with the Natalians preventing their rampant Northern neighbours, the Highveld Hawks, from securing  their third consecutive success.

Ryan Munger came in as a late replacement for an indisposed Gavin Lerena in the defending champion team, made up of Lyle Hewitson, Muzi Yeni and S’manga Khumalo.

But the KZN Falcons team of Anton Marcus, Warren Kennedy, Keagan de Melo and Sean Veale were unstoppable and secured the trophy, with the in-form De Melo awarded the victor ludorum, with the highest individual total.

The Cape Eagles team of Greg Cheyne, Richard Fourie, Bernard Fayd’herbe and Corne Orffer were third.

The final team standings were:

Falcons 161

Hawks 135

Eagles 130
