RIP George Scott

Farewell to much loved horseman

George Scott

‘Uncle George’

The Sporting Post is sad to relate the passing of much loved trainer and racing personality “Uncle George” Scott on the evening of 14 June 2016 after a brief illness.

Scott started his training career in Bloemfontein, sending out his first runners some 43 years ago.  He later relocated to the Highveld and held 25 boxes at Turffontein.  At 84 years young, was the most senior of our active trainers.

The Highveld-based trainer was admired not only as a fine horseman, but also as a colourful individual.  His determination and professionalism shone through in his winning enclosure interviews which were often liberally laced with humourous innuendo.

He passed his love of the game on to others including his two nephews Colin, who trains successfully out of Summerveld today, and Rob, the current CEO of TellyTrack.

The last winner George saddled was Samarra, a Global One filly ridden to victory on 24 December 2015 by S’Manga Khumalo.

Scott’s best horse in recent times was the speedy Muhtafal gelding Fair Brutus, who won eight races, including back to back wins in the Gr2 Senor Santa Sprint and Listed Man O’ War Sprint at Newmarket in 2007.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, 22nd June 2016 at 2pm at Rivers Church Sandton, Cn & Roads, South Rd, Sandton 2196

Our sincere condolences to his family, friends and all who will feel his passing.
