Sandown Stud’s resident sire Ashaawes had an eye catching winner in Dubai on Thursday, when the Oldlands Stud bred Sanshaawes won the District One Trophy Handicap over 2000m.

The durable six-year-old was making just his second start since 2015, having finished third last time out on his seasonal debut.
Thursday’s three parts of a length defeat (conceding 3kgs) of Wilgerbosdrift Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes winner Whistle Stop was the third Dubai win of Sanshaawes’ career and his fourth overall. He stopped the clock in a time of 124.48.
Sanshaawes has been one of the great bargain buys of all time.
The gelding cost a mere R30 000 at the 2011 Cape Summer Regional Yearling Sale, and, to date, has earned more than R225 000 in South Africa, and over 1 million dirhams –and counting.
A proven Gr1 performer himself, the gelding ran third in the G1 Investec Cape Derby (to champion Capetown Noir) and second in the G1 Maktoum Challenge (beaten only by subsequent Dubai World Cup winner Prince Bishop), and he has also competed in such top flight contests as the G1 Dubai World Cup and G1 QE II Cup in Hong Kong. Among the top horses beaten by Sanshaawes thus far are Dubai World Cup winners African Story and Prince Bishop, Investec Derby winner Ruler Of The World, and Hong Kong Horse Of The Year Military Attack.

His sire Ashaawes has sired high class stakes performers in each of his first crops to race.
Among the sire’s best are Gr3 Matchem Stakes winner Reim, the now retired Gr3 Champagne Stakes heroine Priceless Jewel, Sanshaawes, stakes winners Scented Ash and Way Clear, and lightning fast sprinter Asstar.
Ashaawes is a son of French 2000 Guineas winner Kingmambo, who died this week and who left behind a tremendous legacy through his sons and daughters. His offspring won major features the world over, with their wins including the Japan Cup -twice, French 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas-twice, St Leger, Investec Oaks, 1000 Guineas, and Belmont Stakes, to name a few.
Kingmambo’s top sire sons included the likes of Lemon Drop Kid, King Kamehameha and King’s Best, and his daughters produced such notable performers as Derby winners Camelot and Ruler Of The World, as well as Drakenstein’s top sire Duke Of Marmalade.
