The KZN Summer Challenge is designed to give the average handicapper in that province an opportunity to compete for larger stakes.

The series runs from 11 August to 19 November 2013.

Three final races for a stake of R150 000 each will be run over 1200m, 1600m and 1950m, and trainers will be given a chance to earn an incentive bonus.

The finals will be run on Sunday 8 December 2013 at Scottsville Racecourse.

An incentive bonus will be payable to trainers, whose pre-entered horses finish in the top 3 positions in the final log on 20 November 2013 as follows:

1st: R20 000 • 2nd: R10 000 • 3rd: R5 000

The qualifying conditions and races include all Handicap races (excluding features) run in KwaZulu-Natal between 11 August 2013 and 19 November 2013. This is provided that the net Merit Rating of a horse (after WFA Allowance) may not exceed 94 in the race in which it participates.

A horse that has won a Maiden race in KZN needs to run in one further qualifying race between 11 August 2013 and 19 November 2013 to qualify to be entered to run in any final.

Horses that have won Maiden races outside of KZN need to run in two further qualifying races between 11 August 2013 and 19 November 2013 to qualify  to be entered to run in any final.

Qualifiers will run for normal stakes, but in addition will earn qualifying points as follows:

1st .  .  . 7 points 2nd .  .  . 5 points 3rd .  .  .  . 4 points

4th .  .  . 3 points 5th .  .  .  . 2 points 6th .  .  .  . 1 point

Ironically, it is a Cape based yard that heads the log with the top two places!
