Combining the 2017 CTS March and April Select Sale into one sale for 2018 made for a 323-lot catalogue, split in three parts.
Top lot – Silvano colt (#47)
A Select session of 117 lots, with a minimum bid of R50k, and a second session of 205 lots with a R20k minimum bid, both qualifying for the CTS Millions races. A third session of 21 lots without Million tickets, where the minimum bid was R15k, rounded things off.
Buyers responded as expected, with eighteen of the twenty highest prices coming from the Select session. Vaughan Marshall secured the R700k top lot, a Silvano colt from Klawervlei. The yearling’s dam is a stakes winner by Captain Al out of Gr1 winner Roxanne. This is the female line of Legislate.
Second top price of R525k was for a Captain Al filly from Klawervlei, on a bid from Jacques Chowles on behalf of Itlaaq (Pty) Ltd. The filly is the first foal of a Trippi half sister to three stakes performers by Captain Al.
Third highest price was shared by two yearling colts. Winterbach Stud sold a R500k Vercingetorix half brother to a multiple winner, their dam a Jet Master mare from the same female line as the sale’s top-priced colt and Legislate. Adam Marcus secured a R500k Argentine-bred colt by Gr1 sire Exchange Rate from Klawervlei. The youngsters’ dam is an unraced half sister to a Gr1 winner, with the next dam half sister to US Horse of the Year Invasor (who famously failed the inspection of Terence Millard on a buying trip in Argentina some fifteen years ago).
The Select portion of the sale had 81 yearlings sold, with a median of R110k.
The top price in the non-Select second session was shared by two colts, a What A Winter from Drakenstein and Silvano from Klipdrif, both going for a highly respectable R260k. This session saw 118 yearlings sold, with a median of R45k.
