Sire Affinities

This month's top-5 sires

When a stallion first goes to stud there’s much guesswork about which mares he’ll work best with. As information emerges, crop-by-crop, the picture becomes clearer. Sometimes overwhelmingly so, when a sire and broodmare sire really hit it off. Golden Thatch & Royal Prerogative were a pair. Sportsworld & Elliodor. Al Mufti & Dancing Champ. But things aren’t always that clear. Mostly, to unearth the gems, you have to investigate a stallion’s progeny in detail.

That’s done every month for the five leading stallions on the South African sire-log (March 2011 to date): Jet Master (1), Captain Al (2), Western Winter (3),  Silvano (4),  Kahal (5).

Listed are all of the sires’ runners with SSI of 1.00 or more (SSI is Standard-Start-Index, comparing average earning per start to that of the ‘average’ stallion – 1.00 is average).

The listing shows the offspring (with sex and year of birth), their dam (with her sire and damsire), runs, wins, stakes wins/places, stakes won and SSI.

Also shown are the winning distances, and ability ratings (AR) achieved by distance category (there are five, from sprints to long distance). If the horse was sold the sale price is shown, with SI (Sale Index, which is price compared to that of the average horse of the same sex at the same sale).
