'We have it covered'

In a story last week,  ‘Australia Lead The Charge’, we reported on new social media conduct rules introduced by the Australian horseracing authorities.

Following that story, we approached the National Horseracing Authority CEO Denzil Pillay for comment and he kindly replied as follows:

The Australian rule aims specifically at the new forms of publication like Twitter, Facebook and other social media.

In our view these are simply variants of publication, although obviously very much more immediate and accessible to members of the public.

The NHA has in its rules provisions dealing with bringing the NHA and the horseracing industry into disrepute.

In the NHA’s view these provisions are adequate as they seek to balance the industry’s reputation with the public’s right to free speech.
