Spanish Harlem

The impeccably-bred  KZN based Danehill stallion Spanish Harlem has enjoyed a good November, with two of his progeny winning  this month.

Spanish Harlem stood his first season at stud in 2009.

He celebrated his first winner, when the filly Sweet Harlem won on the Vaal sand by almost two and half lengths over 1200m on 14 November.

Owned by Mr Ramphelane Mathunyane and bred by Mr Robert Muir, Sweet Harlem was part of the first sales draft of Midlands Thoroughbreds that included Gr 2 winning Virgo’s Babe.

Out of Sweet Briar by Joshua Dancer, the Leon Erasmus trained Sweet Harlem had placed once previously over 1000m.

The stallion then scored again a week later when Diane Stenger’s Wensleydale won a F&M Maiden Plate over 1400m last Thursday on the Vaal turf.

Bred by the Makins’ Breedon Stud, the 3yo filly is out the twice winning Averof mare, Tijuana Flirt.

She was winning at her eighth start, and had been knocking at the door with three second places.

Spanish Harlem, a 16.3hh imposing son of Danehill out of the brilliant Gr 1 1000 Guineas winner Sleepytime by Royal Academy, stands at Middlefield Stud in Mooi River.

A two-time winner in the USA and Ireland over 1400-1700m, Spanish Harlem placed four times – including a second in the Gr 3 Gallinule Stakes over 2000m, as well as placing in the Listed Aquaduct Brushing Up Stakes.

Spanish Harlem stands at Middlefield Stud in Mooi River KZN for a fee of R7 000.
