Back to its traditional date in Vodacom July week, the KZN yearling sale has a new home, not far from the original ‘Stables’ venue. It’s the Suncoast Casino, right on the Durban beach front, an environment not unlike the Cape sale near the Waterfront – although prices in Durban are unlikely to scale the same heights.
That said, there are interesting youngsters by sires who are in the news, or with dams from great families. The KZN sale may be regarded these days as the Cinderella of yearling (and 2yo) sales in South Africa, but continues to contribute its share of highclass horses.
All you need is an eye for a Horse (with capital H) and a bit of Luck (the spin of the wheel), as the connections of the most recent eye-catchers Seal and Variometer will readily admit. Gr1 SA Derby winner of 2011 Seal was a R210k purchase and 2011 Ruffian Stakes winner Variometer changed hands at R140k. No doubt there will be a big fish in the 2011 pond as well.
