There were increases in both the average and median prices at the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, which concluded early Friday evening.

Remarkably the sale which had 30 horses fewer than last year managed to all but equal the gross turnover from 2013. The final statistics saw the aggregate slip (but by less than 1%) from R20 690 000 to R20 555 000.

The average for the 2014 KZN Sale rose to R100 268 from R88 798 (an increase of 13%), while the median price rose a stunning 40% from R50 000 to R70 000. Just 14 lots failed to reach their reserve, while 33 yearlings were bought back by their respective vendors.

The sales topper came in the form of lot 102, a magnificent Var colt who was consigned by the Gary Player Stud Farm (As Agent) and who fetched R1 000 000.

A full-brother to two top sprinters in the form of August Rush and Miss October, the sales topping colt was knocked down to prominent owner, Adriaan Van Vuuren. The sales topper rose by R350 000 up from last year’s R650 000 sales topper.

Second top lot of the two day sale was a colt by champion sire Silvano. Catalogued as lot 105, the colt, consigned by Maine Chance Farms, was knocked down to Brian Burnard for R750 000. Named Calabash, the handsome colt is out of a stakes winning full sister to successful local sire Toreador, from a top international family.

Leading sire Captain Al was the sire of the sales top priced filly, who was knocked down to St John Gray for R350 000. Consigned by Boland Stud, the filly, catalogued as lot 260, was the second last lot sold on the final day of the sale. She is out of Qui Success, a stakes placed daughter of Qui Danzig.

Misty Meadows Racing was the sales’ leading buyer, having purchased four lots for R1 540 000, while Mauritzfontein Stud was leading vendor. The farm consigned 11 lots, of which ten grossed R2 190 000.

Mary Slack will be thrilled about Ideal World

It was a memorable sale for Mauritzfontein Stud, whose resident sire Ideal World was the sales’ most successful stallion, by aggregate. The son of Kingmambo was responsible for 8 lots who grossed R1 500 000, with an average price of R187 500. Highest priced of the Ideal Worlds to sell was lot 235, a colt out of Money Spider who fetched R340 000.

Second leading sire, by aggregate, was Var (whose four yearlings to sell fetched R1 490 000) ahead of Silvano, Miesque’s Approval and Mogok.

TBA CEO Jan Naude was pleased with the outcome of the 2014 KZN Yearling Sale, and commented post sale, “Even with fewer horses than last year, we still managed to equal last year’s turnover, and one can only be pleased with the increase in average and median. We are also grateful to the support from both buyers and vendors which made the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale such a success.”
