Millard Honoured On Gold Cup Day

SA's greatest modern era trainer

Gold Circle have honoured the memory of the late great Terrance Millard’s dominance of the Gold Cup and have named a feature event on their big day at Hollywoodbets Greyville on 29 August in tribute to the legend who passed away last year.

The Terrance Millard Listed Umngeni Handicap will be run as one of ten feature events on the Gold Cup Super Saturday programme.

World Sports Betting will sponsor the Gold Cup on the occasion of the marathon’s centennial running.

Our greatest modern era conditioner, Terrance Millard trained six Gold Cup winners, in addition to his six Met victories and an equal number of Durban July successes. He also achieved a top three in the July twice.

At the time of his retirement in 1991, Terrance Millard had trained over 2500 winners. He won 117 Gr1 races, 44 Gr2 races and 37 Gr3 races.

His extraordinary record of 117 Gr1 winners was surpassed by Mike de Kock when  Soqrat won the Cape Guineas in 2018.

World Sports Betting will also sponsor the Gr1 Mercury Sprint over 1200m and the Gr1 Champions Cup over 1800m on the same afternoon, the outcomes of which could be significant insofar as the Equus Awards are concerned.

The Hollywoodbets Greyville meeting of 29 August declares at 11h00 on Thursday 20 August.
