Regional Focus On The Catalogue Highlights From Proven Farms From Around The Country

The quality of yearlings on sale at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale remains strong throughout the catalogue. Breeders around the country have supported this year’s National Sale with some superb yearlings, and the catalogue is a particularly strong one from Lot 1 through to Lot 467. It is a real page turner.

A few lots by region, have been mentioned, to give you another angle to pick that magical yearling, focusing on siblings of Graded winners for this article.

KAROO & GAUTENG

Both the Gauteng and Karoo breeders offer some choicely bred yearlings at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. These yearlings come from regions with a history of producing high-class race horses, and are bred to be tough and classy.

Lot 52, a colt by top sire Captain Al, consistently among the leading sires. This colt has a terrific pedigree, being out of the top-class G2 winner, La Deportista. He is also a half-brother to multiple SW Juan Pablo. The bay is also from the family as promising young sire, Lion Tamer. Consigned by Gary Player Stud Farm.

Lot 190, a colt by leading sire Dynasty, whose son Jackson won the recent G1 Investec Cape Derby. This colt is half-brother to the useful performer, The White Horse. Granddam, Beat The Breeze, was a stakes winning daughter of Al Mufti. Consigned by Southford Stud.

Lot 219, a filly by former champion sire Fort Wood, who is also broodmare sire of Breeders Cup winner Pluck. This miss is a three parts sister to G2 Gold Circle Oaks winner Carolina Cherry (by Fort Wood). This is also the family of the ill-fated G1 hero Divine Jury, and his brilliant half-brother, Divine Jet. Consigned by Mauritzfontein Stud.

Lot 255, a filly by the leading sire Captain Al, sire of leading 3yo filly, Trinity House. This filly is out of the top-class racemare, Supper Club. The dam won both the G2 Debutante Stakes and G3 Steinhoff Fillies Mile. This is the family of SA Oaks winner Festive Occasion. Consigned by Gary Player Stud Farm.

Lot 385, a colt by the top-class sire, Kahal – one of South Africa’s most consistent sires of stakes performers. This colt is out of the superb racemare Cholula, whose 11 wins included the G2 Gerald Rosenberg Handicap. From a strong Bosworth family, Cholula is an own sister to G1 winner Topa Inca. Lot 400, a colt by top sprinter Var, sire of such luminaries as Val de Ra and Variety Club. Out of a daughter of Western Winter (broodmare sire of top US performer Howe Great). The dam is a half-sister to G1 winner Hinterland. Consigned by Gary Player Stud Farm.

Lot 455, a daughter of the former Equus Champion 2yo, Argonaut – a well bred son of champion sire Western Winter. This filly is out of the stakes winning mare, Frozen In Time, who is a half-sister to G3 winner Modern Mission. Consigned by Rosedene Stud.

EASTERN CAPE

The Eastern Cape breeders have a strong draft of well bred yearlings, which are bound to attract attention.

Lot 12, a colt by the mighty, and ill fated, Jet Master, sire of Pocket Power, J J The Jet Plane and River Jetez, to name but a few. This colt is out of the Fort Wood mare, Holly Wood. Dam of this yearling is a three parts sister to champion racemare, Dog Wood. Consigned by Ascot Stud.

Lot 50, a filly by the great champion Jet Master, sire of such top fillies as Ebony Flyer and River Jetez. The filly is out of half-sister to top-class overseas filly, Midnight Line.  Granddam, Midnight Air, won the G2 May Hill Stakes. This is a top international family of G1 winners Jan Vermeer and Together. Consigned by Wicklow Stud.

Lot 70, a colt by the blue blooded sire, Tiger Ridge. This colt is out of a mare by the world leading sire and broodmare sire, Indian Ridge. Dam is a half-sister to the useful performer Robin Hood. Third dam, Arctique Royale, won the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Consigned by Wicklow Stud.

Lot 131, a colt by sire sensation Trippi, whose 2yo daughters Agra and Franny are setting the tracks alight. This bay is a half-brother to G1 performer Kings Cross, and is from the wonderful Soho Secret family, responsible for such stars as London News, Kings Gambit and Pluck. Consigned by Danika Stud.

Lot 229, a filly by champion racehorse and world leading sire, Rock of Gibraltar. This filly is out of the high-class racemare, Spottswoode. The latter is a full sister to Australian G1 winner, Sixty Seconds.  This is the family of New Zealand Broodmare of the Year, River Century. Consigned by Ascot Stud.

Lot 264, a colt by Trippi out of Syrian Flame, by All Fired Up. A colt by the wonderfully successful and popular sire, Trippi. Out of a half-sister to Met winner Alastor, this bay is himself a half-brother to top sprinter, National Flame. Consigned by Milkwood Stud.

Lot 324, a filly by outstanding sire Silvano, sire of this season’s top 3yo, Silver Flyer. The filly is a half-sister to two stakes performers, including the classy filly Comet Chaser. This filly, who is out of an Al Mufti mare, is bred on the same Silvano/Al Mufti cross which produced such champions as Kings Gambit and Bold Silvano. Consigned by Milkwood Stud.

Lot 328, a colt by champion sire Fort Wood, sire of such great colts and geldings as Dynasty, Horse Chestnut and Celtic Grove. This colt could well be one of the sales toppers, as not only is he a full brother to top Dubai performer Zanzamar, he is a half-brother to the unbeaten juvenile, Ziparana. Consigned by Danika Stud.

KWA-ZULU NATAL:

There is a superb selection of yearlings from the Kwa Zulu Natal Breeders at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sales. All of the region’s breeders are well represented at the country’s leading yearling sale of 2012.

Some of the best sires, both in Natal and in South Africa, are well represented in the KZN Breeders’s drafts. There are yearlings up for sale by such top-class stallions as Kahal (31), Muhtafal (7), Joshua Dancer (1) and Mogok (7), while they are also a host of youngsters for sale sired by such exciting young stallions as A P Arrow (10), Admire Main (1), Carpocrates (2), Spanish Harlem (2), Mullins Bay (10), Ravishing (3) and Stronghold (4).

Evergreen sire, Kahal, has a particularly attractive consignment of yearlings to this sale. He has full/half siblings to G1 winners Spiced Gold, Indiscreet Fantasy and Rebel King as well as yearlings out of the high-class racemares, Dare to Dream, Cholula and Choice, to name but a few.

Some of the numerous highlights among the Natal breeders’ drafts including:

Lot 16, a colt by Kahal out of Hot Reception, by Muhtafal. A colt who sports two of Natal’s leading names in the stallion barn – Kahal and Muhtafal. Dam, Hot Reception, was a fine racemare, whose 5 wins included the G3 Poinsettia Stakes. Consigned by Summerhill Sales – Property of A Partnership.

Lot 71, a colt by Kahal out of Little Legend, by Complete Warrior. By one of the country’s leading sires, this colt is a full brother to the top-class filly Spiced Gold. The latter won 3 races including the G1 SA Fillies Classic. This is a top-class Koster Bros family. Consigned by Greenhill Farm.

Lot 90, a filly by Admire Main out of Merriment, by Habaayib. The only yearling on sale by Sunday Silence’s top-class son, Admire Main. This filly, beautifully named Too Much Fun, is out of a stakes placed mare. Merriment is a half-sister to G2 winner Superwood, and is a member of the wonderful Soho Secret family. Lot 137, a colt by Mullins Bay out of Pelican Brief, by Piaffer. A half-brother to former July winner Dunford, this colt is a three parts brother to the talented, but ill-fated, Grisham. From the family of numerous champions, this is colt is a son of the top-class, and well bred, Mullins Bay. Consigned by Spring Valley Stud.

Lot 227, a filly by Kahal out of Spectator Appeal, by Zabeel. By a top-class filly sire in Kahal, this miss is out of a mare by world leading sire and broodmare sire, Zabeel. The filly on offer is a half sister to G3 winning stayer, Dream Idol. Consigned by Greenhill Farm.

Lot 239, a filly by Miesque’s Approval out of Stirrup Cup, by Royal Chalice. A daughter of former US champion and Breeders Cup Mile winner, Miesque’s Approval. This filly is a half-sister to former Vodacom Durban July winner, Hunting Tower, since a winner in Dubai. She is from a powerful international family. Consigned by Scott Bros.

Lot 249, a colt by Kahal out of Summer Bonnet, by Harry Hotspur. This colt is bred to by very speedy. By a prolific sire of fast, classy horses, the colt is out of a mare by a former champion sprinter. He is a half-sister to champion filly, Texan Summer. This colt is from the family as this season’s sensational 2yo filly, Franny. Consigned by Avalon Stud.

Lot 251, a colt by Muhtafal out of Summersault, by Northern Guest. This colt is bred on the highly successful Muhtafal/Northern Guest cross. The colt is by one of South Africa’s most consistently successful sires, and is a half brother to Gold Bowl hero, Winning Leap. Consigned by Summerhill Sales –Property of a Gentleman.

Lot 270, a filly by Joshua Dancer out of Texan Summer, by Houston Connection.  The only yearling on sale by the top-class sire Joshua Dancer, sire of Sparkling Gem, Pointing North etc. This filly has plenty of paddock value, as she is out of the champion race filly Texan Summer. Lot 288, a colt by A P Arrow out of True Tempo, by Steady Beat. A son of A P Indy’s illustrious son, A P Arrow, this colt is out of the top-class racemare, True Tempo. He is a half-brother to the very smart stakes winner Sovereign Beat, and is a half-brother to the useful, but ill-fated, Retempo. Consigned by Spring Valley Stud (as Agent)

Lot 295, a filly by Stronghold out of Vanish, by Coastal. A daughter of the ill-fated Stronghold, whose first crop of 2yos have made such a good impression. This filly is a half-sister to the G1 winning sprinter, Disappear. Third dam, Caline, was a G1 winner in the USA. Consigned by Summerhill Sales.

Lot 398, a filly by Kahal out of Cousin Linda, by Badger Land. A filly with tremendous paddock value. She is a half-sister to champion sprinter Rebel King, whose first crop have really caught the eye. This filly is also an own sister to the five time winner Unclue Tommy. Lot 408, a colt by Kahal out of Dare to Dream, by Shalford. By the sire of such top horses as Spiced Gold, Noble Heir and Chocolicious. This colt is out of the Equus Champion 2yo filly, Dare To Dream.  Consigned by Aldora Stud.

Lot 410, a filly by Mogok out of Dazzling Danzig, by Shoe Danzig. This filly is an own sister to smart, stakes winning filly, Corpes da Elite. The filly is by Mogok, sire of international G1 winner Gypsy’s Warning, as well as former Equus Champion, The Apache. The filly’s granddam is the mighty sprinter, Blushing Star. Lot 430 a colt by Kahal out of Fancy Fantasy, by Rainbow Dream.  This is a superbly bred individual, who counts four black type performers as half-siblings. The colt is a half-brother to the brilliant, but ill-fated, G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner, Indiscreet Fantasy. The colt is also a half-brother to the stakes horses Silver Fantasy, Malinga and Personal Fantacy. Consigned by Spring Valley Stud.

WESTERN CAPE

There will be, as ever, a strong representation from some of the Western Cape’s top stud farms at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
Many farms send out some of the very best yearlings for the National Sale, and prices should be good for these classy youngsters.

The Cape farms will sell a number of yearlings by the country’s top sires, such as Silvano, Dynasty, Jet Master, Western Winter and Trippi, to name but a few. There are also yearlings on offer by exciting young sires as Argonaut, Rebel King, Jay Peg and Sail From Seattle.

A number of top-class mares also have yearlings on sale, and the Cape farms offer siblings to such distinguished performers as Ivory Trail, Control Freak, Tiza, Pointing North and Chesalon, to name just a few.

Lot 1, is a colt by the perennial leading sire Silvano, whose stock have excelled here and overseas. He is a half-brother to the unbeaten Happy Forever. Granddam, Happy Heiress, won the G2 Southern Cross Stakes. Consigned by Maine Chance Farms.

Lot 20, a filly by the leading filly sire, Captain Al. Out of a Northern Guest mare, this filly is a half-sister to G1 winner Zeeno. Granddam, Melting, was a crack sprinter in her own right. Consigned by The Alchemy.

Lot 21, a filly by Storm Cat sire Tiger Ridge. This filly is out of the former Horse of the Year, Ilha Da Vitoria. She is already the dam of stakes winner Ilha Grande, while Ilha Bela ran a close second in the recent G2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas. Consigned by Wilgerbosdrift.

Lot 36, is a colt by triple champion sire Western Winter, sire of a host of G1 winners. This colt is a half-brother to G2 winner Omaha Beach, and a full brother to G1 performer Next Spring. The dam is a half-sister to champion Classic Flag. Consigned by Moutonshoek.

Lot 40, is a colt by top sire Trippi. Dam, Kaleido, is an own sister to former Horse of the Year, National Colour. The latter won in Dubai and was also second in the UK’s G1 sprint, the Nunthorpe Stakes. Consigned by Klawervlei (as Agent).

Lot 56, is a filly from the first crop of former Champion 2yo colt, Argonaut. This beautifully bred miss is a half-sister to two stakes winners including Star Empire, who has won in Dubai. This is a very high-class New Zealand female line. Consigned by Hyjo Stud.

Lot 83, a colt by globetrotter and top sire, Silvano. This colt is a half-brother to top sprinter, Magico. This colt is bred on the same cross which produced champions Kings Gambit and Bold Silvano. Consigned by Maine Chance Farms.

Lot 101, a colt by successful sire, Count Dubois. The colt is out of the Dancing Champ mare, Morning Fresh, and is thus a half-brother to former G1 Gold Cup winner, Reveille Boy.  Morning Fresh is a half-sister to top sprinters, Super Magic and Command Control. Consigned by Maine Chance Farms.

Lot 110, a colt by brilliant sire Captain Al, sire of a host of classy, precocious stock. The colt is a half-brother to champion sprinter, Mythical Flight. The latter won over R1.3 million and his wins included scores in the G1 Computaform Sprint and G1 Cape Flying Championship. Consigned by The Alchemy.

Lot 113, a colt by the mighty Jet Master. He is out of the stakes placed mare, Nations Best, and is a half-brother to G3 winner Olympic Gold. Granddam, Early Miss, bred no fewer than five stakes horses, including the G2 winners Casino Queen and Jungle Earl. Consigned by Daytona Stud.

Lot 150, a colt by former Horse of the Year, and leading sire, Dynasty. He is out of a West Man mare, and is a half-brother to G3 winner, Promises To Keep. Dam is a half-sister to stakes winner of nine, Knockout. Consigned by Highlands Farm Stud.

Lot 189, a colt by champion racehorse, Badger’s Drift. This colt is a half-brother to current top performer Run For It, who was fourth in the recent G1 J&B Met. Dam is an own sister to Horse of the Year Free My Heart. Consigned by Maine Chance Farms.

Lot 191, a colt by the great sire Jet Master, this could be one of the highlights of the sale. He is out of the top-class racemare Sarabande, winner of the G1 Majorca Stakes. The colt is a half-brother to G2 winner Chesalon. Consigned by Avontuur Thoroughbred Estate.

Lot 232, a colt by the ever popular Trippi. This bay is a half-brother to top-class 2yo Cool Zone, who won the Listed Somerset Plate. Dam is a full sister to former G3 Cape Nursery winner, Ghostly Galleon. Consigned by The Alchemy.

Lot 252, a colt by top sire Captain Al, twice champion juvenile sire. A colt who received the staggering score of 19.5 from the panel, this colt is an own brother to former G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner, Captain’s Lover, herself a G3 winner in the US. This colt is also a half-brother to another Guineas winning filly in Ebony Flyer. Consigned by Klipdrif Stud (as Agent).

Lot 260, a colt by top class sire Captain Al. The bay is a half-brother to G2 winner Princess Sassi, and hails from a speedy family which produced champion sprinter Mythical Flight. Consigned by Riverton Stud.

Lot 278, a colt by Black Minnaloushe, sire of this season’s top 2yo filly, The Black Rose. This colt is a half-brother to Zimbabwean sensation Control Freak, who ran a good fourth recently in the G2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas. The colt is out of the smart racemare, Time Control, who was placed in the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas. Consigned by Cheveley Stud.

Lot 391, a colt by leading young sire Trippi, who currently heads the 2yo sires list with his first crop of local runners. The colt is out of a Model Man mare, and is a half-brother to former G1 Cape Guineas winner, Pointing North. This is a prolific family of such top-class horses as Wainui, Waitara and Rodoille. Lot 418, a filly, with tremendous paddock value, from the first crop of well bred sire Judpot. The yearling is out of the brilliant racemare, Duchess Daba. The dam won 8 races including the G1 November Handicap. She is a daughter of multiple SW Izindaba. Consigned by Varsfontein Stud.

Lot 439, a colt by A P Indy’s well bred son, Judpot. The bay is a half brother to four winners, and is out of the G1 Garden Province winner Final Claim. The latter is a half-sister to former Cape Guineas Alpha Omega. Consigned by Varsfontein Stud.

Lot 457, a colt from the first crop of the well bred sire, Sail From Seattle. This colt is a half-brother to unbeaten 2yo sensation, Soft Falling Rain. The latter won the Listed Storm Bird Stakes last time out. Dam is a daughter of world leading sire and broodmare sire, Giant’s Causeway. This is a cracking international family. Lot 460, a colt by the mighty Jet Master, who tragically died recently. This colt is out of the Golden Thatch mare, Gilded Star, and is thus an own brother to G1 winner Stratos. The colt is also a half-brother to G1 performer, World Of Stars. Consigned by Klipdrif Stud (as Agent).

Lot 466, a colt by the late, great sire, Jet Master. Out of the stakes placed mare, Guest Among Men, this colt is a three parts brother to top international sprinter, J J The Jet Plane. The latter has won over R10 million in prize money to date. Consigned by Klipdrif Stud (as Agent).
