Tiger Hill Colt – lot 189

The 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale represents a rare opportunity for South African buyers to acquire a son of Danehill’s champion son, Tiger Hill.

Lot 189, consigned by Drakenstein Stud, is a colt by Tiger Hill out of a winning daughter of the now deceased, world leading sire Dynaformer. The colt’s sire, Tiger Hill, was a dual German Champion on the track and one of the finest racehorses of his generation.

A son of legendary sire Danehill, Tiger Hill captured 10 of his 17 outings including two runnings of the Group One Grosser Preis Von Baden twice. He also ran third in the 1998 Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe.

Retired to stud, Tiger Hill sadly died prematurely when breaking a leg in his paddock. He was 17 at the time of his death. Nonetheless, Tiger Hill proved a highly successful sire, producing over 40 stakes winners in an all too brief stud career.

He was responsible for a number of top-class racehorses including G1 Prince of Wales Stakes and Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic hero Rewilding, as well as the Group One winners Iota, Konigstiger and Sortilege. He is also broodmare sire of German Oaks winner Salomina.

Tiger Hill’s son on sale has an equally appealing female line. A half-brother to a number of winners, (his half-brother Hogue recently won in North America) his broodmare sire Dynaformer was one of the world’s great sires prior to his demise in 2012.

A son of the mighty Roberto, Dynaformer left behind such outstanding racehorses as Americain (Melbourne Cup), Barbaro (Kentucky Derby), and Lucarno (St Leger) as well as champions Blue Bunting, Rainbow View and Ocean Silk, to name but a few.

Dynaformer has also been in the news of late as the broodmare sire of top US 3yo General A Rod. Winner of the Gulfstream Park Derby, General A Rod is one of the top contenders for the Kentucky Derby this year, having finished second in the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes and third in the recent Gr1 Florida Derby.

The colt is on sale is from the same family as former Champion 2YO Colt Mujahid, as well as the outstanding fillies Dark Mirage and Indian Skimmer. This is also the family of outstanding US performers Graydar and Ron The Greek, whom, between them have won all of the Gr1 Donn Handicap, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Santa Anita Handicap and Stephen Foster Handicap
