It is with a heavy heart that we heard of the sudden passing of Billy Steele, writes Rodney Dunn, Honorary Life Vice-President of Western Province Racing.

Everyone in racing in the Western Province wish to pay tribute to a really ‘good guy’- a friendly, well mannered gentleman who was well respected by all who knew him.

He had a heart of gold and his charitable support for the under privileged was well recognized by all who knew him.

He gave his full support to our WPOTA fund raising events which donated millions over the 21 years to our WPOTA charity organizations.

Billy, from as early as 1980 until this sad day, served as a Trustee of our WPOTA Benevolent Trust Fund.

Billy also served with the utmost distinction as WPOTA Chairman and Vice Chairman during the 80’s, and early 90’s.

His commitment was such, that as Vice Chairman of NATFED for many years, he represented South African Owners at many National and International Conventions and horseracing events.

During those years he worked tirelessly for the betterment of the horseracing industry and the owners.

Billy was also instrumental in supporting John Freeman in starting the WP Grooms School Trust and felt that education should play a major role in the upliftment of grooms.  He fully supported the WP Equine Trust and the Horse Care Unit in the Western Cape.

Billy’s red & white striped silks were prominent on Cape Racecourses, with his horses like Mighty Atom, Billy Liar, Raging Blade, Badgers Lake and Regal Satisfaction.

His passion for horses and the sport was always evident when talking to him.

From all of us in horseracing and as a good friend, he will always be remembered for his integrity and the attention to detail for the sport which he shared with all of us.

Our sincere condolences go to his wonderful wife Joy, their children Kim and Jed and his ever supporting brothers Brad, Bevan & Jeffrey and their families.

Ed- No funeral arrangements have been made public per Tuesday 19 May.
