Trippi’s Ninth Gr1 Winner

Rare L'Ormarins Queen's Plate success

Drakenstein Stud’s champion resident sire Trippi supplied his ninth individual Gr1 winner when his Drakenstein Stud-bred son Jet Dark won the Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate at Kenilworth on Saturday afternoon.

Winner of last season’s Gr3 Beaumont Stud Langerman, Jet Dark received a fine ride from Grant Van Niekerk to lift the spoils in Saturday’s R1 000 000 feature.

Winner of four of just seven starts, Jet Dark became the first three-year-old since Gimmethegreenlight in 2012 to win the Queen’s Plate.

In the process, the Trippi colt received an automatic berth in the 2021 Gr1 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF.

Trained by Justin Snaith, Jet Dark came into Saturday’s race off a fast finishing fourth place in the Gr1 Cape Racing Presents The Cape Guineas when beaten less than two lengths by the winner.

A R200 000 buy from the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, Jet Dark is out of the Jet Master mare Night Jet.

His champion sire Trippi, responsible for 80 black type winners, has enjoyed another fine season in 2020-2021 thus far and is also responsible for this season’s multiple stakes winner Crome Yellow, Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile second Charles, and Gr3 Lebelo Sprint winner Mombela.
