July Could Crown A Big Season For Muzi

Highveld Season Championship a nice boost

Winning Form sponsored Muzi Yeni, who was crowned champion jockey at the Highveld Feature Season Awards in Johannesburg last Wednesday, will partner Daisy Fillies Guineas winner Fiorella in Saturday’s Gr1 Woolavington 2000 at Greyville.

Muzi steers Lobo’s Legend to a thrilling win in the Gr1 SA Glassic

Buoyed by his Highveld Feature Award, the 31 year old Northern Cape Champion rider is enjoying the season of his life after a slow start.

“The Mauritius delay meant my season started late. But that is all behind me and I am enjoying good support from strong yards – which helps a lot. I am indebted to the likes of Robbie Sage, Joey Soma, Mike de Kock and Dianne Stenger for putting their confidence in me here in Gauteng.”

It was in fact the first season that Muzi has spent focussed on the Highveld – he has divided his time between KZN and Kimberley, even Fairview at times in past years – and has regularly finished on the heels of Anthony Delpech and Anton Marcus.

He rode an extraordinary seven feature winners in the Highveld Season, which included two Gr1 victories on Coral Fever and Lobo’s Legend.

Muzi is currently third on the SA Championship log and says he is aiming for a runner-up berth.

“It’s not in my nature to go for second, usually! But Lyle is getting the quality Tarry rides and he will be difficult to rein in. Not that I am not trying, believe me!”

He is also focussed on winning an unbelievable eighth Northern Cape Championship title this term.

“Kimberley is my second home! The people are wonderful. I love riding there and the Northern Cape has been a major contributor to my success.”

He will ride Coral Fever for Robbie Sage in the Vodacom Durban July. “He is a game and lionhearted horse who gives his all. I am looking forward to 7 July and it’s a race that I would dearly love to include on my CV!”
