Accident on R59

The Sporting Post is sad to report that there was a multi-car pile-up on the R59 near the Vaal racecourse on Friday, 5 June 2015, involving a number of work riders from James Maree’s Eikenhof work rider programme.

Smoke from a veld fire caused reduced visibility on the road and the bus collided with the back of a truck.  While passengers were trying to disembark, the bus was reportedly hit from behind by an oncoming vehicle.

We do not have much detail at this early stage and cannot confirm any names involved, but understand that the driver of the bus was injured and has been airlifted to hospital where he is receiving medical attention.  A work rider from Louis Goosen’s yard was also seriously injured and is also  receiving medical attention.  The 13-car pile-up involved nine cars, three minibus taxis and a truck and has resulted in 4 fatalities.  It is believed that a member of the Lucky Houdalakis yard may be among the casualties.

Our thoughts and condolences to all concerned.
