July:Balls On The Block

Captain America

Captain America may the the best outsider

I’ve never tried to predict or summarize a big race from A to Z, 9 days in advance. I thought it might be high time for me to be ‘shot down’ and declare my allegiance.

Sporting Post reader William Milkovitch has thrown down the gauntlet and announced his July opinions way in advance.

No doubt there will be plenty of counter-argument, but that is the wonderful allure of an open race where every runner will have his supporters-even if it is only the connections, in some cases!

1              RAKE`S CHESTNUT

I’ve yet to see a horse, only having his 4th run, been interfered with at the business end of a race and almost winning it. Remarkable effort.

2              LOUIS THE KING

I was surprised how well he ran in the Daily News 2000 after a tough Jhbg campaign. He must be a gladiator.

3              FUTURA

If ever a horse needed a hard run race… it’s Futura. For me, he’ll stay 2400+. He must still have plenty to come. Mr. Hatt wouldn’t want to be made a fool of !

4              LEGISLATE

I thought Mr. Fourie panicked a bit in DN2000, so still impressive coming wide out to hold on for win. A muddling pace would be his downfall.

5              PUNTA ARENAS

I fancied him in this last year. A false run race would kill him. 5 y/o who has actually held form & improved a touch.

6              CAPTAIN AMERICA

With 54 kg, I hope he tries to go start to finish. Everybody will expect him to fade for Futura. Might be best outsider.

7              IN THE FAST LANE

Looks a tough-nuttress. Will she be sacrificed as pacemaker for Legislate? I’m confident she’s the best of the girls, even if she goes to the front.

What to expect from King Of Pain?

What to expect from King Of Pain?

8              KING OF PAIN

I haven’t a clue what to expect here. Tactically I’m not sure where he fits into the race for best chance? I’ll include him for upset.

9              WYLIE HALL

Showed he can handle Greyville on both starts. I must give him an outsider chance but best hope is for 4th or 5th.

10           TELLINA

Two good runs over 2000m, in Jhbg only. ONE poor run @ Greyville. 4 y/o Silvano “profile” might be his saving grace. I can’t see him winning though.

11           HALVE THE DEFICIT

The only positive for this horse  is 55 kg. Did Striker not say he thought 2200 m was beyond him? I’m confused. No winning chance for me.

12           ESPUMANTI

Clearly enjoys Greyville. Should have taken on Beach Beauty in Garden Province.

13           CHERRY ON THE TOP

I’m surprised she’s running over 2200m. Was Mr. Ferraris pressured to run her here? My favorite jockey needs to perform a miracle.

14           CAPETOWN NOIR

Can’t stay 2200. Mr. Kannemeyer and the whole world knows that!

15           WHITELINE FEVER

I simply don’t believe he stays 2000m, never mind 2200m. A hard trier though. Shame, I feel for him being “pushed” to perform over 2200m.

16           JET BELLE

Should have got a run in last year’s race, but not this year!? Very disappointing for me. Garden Province runner…surely ?
