The Listed Jockey Club Stakes to be run at Fairview on Friday is the third leg of the 2015 East Cape Fillies and Mares Challenge.
The feature race is named in recognition of the fact that the Jockey Club (now the National Horseracing Authority) was founded in Port Elizabeth almost 130 years ago.
R700 000 was set aside for this series of three races for fillies and mares. Besides the total stake monies of R450 000 on offer, a Challenge bonus of R250 000 was on offer to the filly or mare who could win all three legs.
Interestingly, the challenge has hardly been marketed by the racing authority – strange, with so much money at stake, surely?
With the three legs spread over distances of 1200m to 2000m, it is a tough ‘Triple Crown’ to win by any standards!
The smart speedster Yoshie won the first leg, the R150 000 Listed East Cape Breeders Stakes run over 1200m at Fairview on 3 July.
The Mike Bass-trained Supreme Sunset won the second leg, the R150 000 Listed East Cape Paddock Stakes run over 1600m at Fairview on 24 July. Although not by design, the second leg was run on the polytrack.
Neither of the first two leg winners line up on Friday.
