Cherry on the top of the achievement with a top two finish in the Peach Blossom Handicap

Glyn and Chad Schofield became the first father-son duo to ride in the same race in the professional era of horse racing in Hong Kong at the Sha Tin meeting on Sunday and put the cherry on the top of the achievement with a top two finish in the Peach Blossom Handicap.

The 1650m HK$800 000 race proved a real thriller for SA racing fans in general, with young Chad riding a bold race on Ho Lee Horse to beat Dad Glyn on Entrusting, with Dougie Whyte third on Super Silks.

To make matters even more interesting, Mauritian born former SA based Karis Teetan ran fifth on True Comment.

Glyn was not to be outdone and was in the winner’s enclosure two races later on Vanilla for Caspar Frownes.

Chad has been based at Sha Tin as a club jockey since last September, with Glyn based in Sydney.

With the current shortage of riders, Glyn was called upon by the Jockey Club to ride on Sunday – presenting a first for Hong Kong racing, although both have ridden against each other many times in Australia.

It is not the first time that a father-son combination have been licensed at the same time, though – Hong Kong legend Tony Cruz began his career in 1973-74 while his father Johnny still held a licence, but they never rode in the same race.
