Top PE Stayer Entered For Gold Cup

Two PE contenders set for Gold Cup

Crown Of Gold - Kenilworth 12-04-21

Crown Of Gold has been entered for the Gold Cup

35 entries have been received for each of the Gr1 R1 250 000 Gold Cup and the Gr1 R1 million Champions Cup will which will be run on the final Saturday of the season at Greyville.

Supplementary entries for both closed today and the most notable feature of the additional four Gold Cup entries are the inclusion of the Tara Laing-trained dual PE Gold Cup winner Crown Of Gold and Terry Lowe’s Fan Club’s Mister gelding, Dancing Club.

The Silvano gelding Crown Of Gold stays all day and was recently a runaway winner of South Africa’s longest race.

While he will have a tough task, he is a hardy sort who could pop up if conditions suit him on the day. He is not the only Windy City candidate with Yvette Bremner having also nominated Blaze Of Fire.

Terry Lowe trained the Freedom Land gelding Polo Classic to win the J&B Met under Barend Vorster in 2002. The winner was bred by Lionel Cohen.

Lowe has had a very quiet time of it in recent years, but announced he was refocusing on training recently.

His 4yo gelding Dancing Club recently followed up on his Vaal maiden win with a shock victory in an RA Pinnacle Stakes  over 2600m last Sunday. He beat Joey Soma’s well performed Savage Wind by 1,50 lengths.

He won that off an MR of 62 so it will be interesting to monitor his progress in securing a spot in the Gr1.

Sky Rise and Storm Warning are the other two supplementary entries, but neither have the form to inspire too much confidence at Gr1 level.

The Gr1 Champion’s Cup reads like a who’s who of July Day stars and includes the champion mare Beach Beauty in what is expected to be her swansong and the July ‘winner’, Wylie Hall.

The Gold Cup and Champion’s Cup final fields will be declared on Tuesday 15 July.

The Super Saturday feature menu includes the 2yo features, the R600 000 Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes and the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes (fillies) which are both run over a mile.
