Hennenman Remembered

First off at 12h30

Today’s Turffontein racemeeting on the inside track is the Hennenman Memorial Race Day, which commemorates the tragic plane crash on 12 April 1988 in which 13 jockeys, one trainer, five officials, two owners and three crew members lost their lives, returning from a race-meeting in Bloemfontein.

The passenger log included 13 of South Africa’s leading riding lights of the time – Keith Basel, Lawrence Riley, Johannes “Rooies” Fourie, Warren Baillie, Bennie de Wet, Greg Holme, Douglas Roper, Danny Lombard, John McMurtry, Mark Nel, Michael Coetzee, Simon Rahilly and Gordon Sterley.

Races 2 to 8 carry the names of the 24 people who lost their lives.

The first race is off at 12h30.

The Bipot commences in the second at 13h05.

The false rail is set at 2.5m on the back straight to 4m on the bend, with a 5.5m spur at the 500m mark.
