Judpot Makes History

Blueblooded sire’s historic achievements

Judpot

Judpot

Judpot’s achievement of producing two Grade One horses (Forest Indigo, Along Came Polly), a Grade Two winner (Colour of Courage) and another stakes performer (Juddering Angel) from his first juvenile crop has made him arguably the most exciting young stallion currently standing in South Africa.

Judpot is currently second on the first crop sires list, and fourth on the leading sires of juveniles list. He also holds strong chances in the season’s final two Grade One juvenile contests on Saturday. Should Forest Indigo or Along Came Polly win the Premier’s Champion Stakes or Thekwini Stakes respectively, either juvenile will place themselves firmly in place for an Equus award.

Judpot’s first crop of juveniles include six winners, who earned over R1 100 000 in prize money. His yearlings, understandably popular, included the sales topper at the recent Klawervlei Farm Sale (a filly who fetched R240 000), and three colts who fetched R450 000 apiece at the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

However this success, while it may have occurred earlier than may have been expected, is hardly surprising when looking at Judpot’s magnificent pedigree.

A P Indy

His sire A P Indy was not only a Horse of the Year, but is one of the best stallions to have stood at stud in North America over the past decades.

A P Indy, a member of North America’s Hall of Fame, had sired 148 stakes winners – of whom no fewer than 27 are Grade One winners. His stock have earned over $164 000 000 and he is is responsible for ten official champions.

The greatness of A P Indy as a sire can also be gauged in the fact that he has no fewer than 29 sire sons registered in the Blood Horse Stallion Register. His sons feature prominently in the various US sire lists, with Malibu Moon (sire of this year’s Kentucky Derby winner Orb) currently second leading sire, by earnings, in North America. Another son, Majestic Warrior, is North America’s second leading second crop sire, following his daughter Princess of Sylmar’s victory in the 2013 Kentucky Oaks.
His sons Bernardini, Malibu Moon and Majestic Warrior are three of North America’s hottest sires, as is a grandson of A P Indy – Tapit.

One of the greatest racemares

Judpot’s dam, Miesque, is one of the greatest racemares of all time. She, like A P Indy is a Hall of Famer – which gives Judpot the rare distinction of having two parents make the Hall of Fame.
The daughter of Nureyev was rated in the top 100 thoroughbreds to have raced in North American in a recent survey conducted by the Blood Horse – despite making only two starts on that continent! She won both – the 1987 Breeders Cup Mile and the same race one year later.
Miesque is honoured by feature races in both France and North America – the G3 Prix Miesque and Gr3 Miesque Stakes respectively.

During her three season campaign, Miesque won 12 of her 16 races. Remarkably, ten of her 12 wins came in Grade/Group One contests. She is one of just three fillies in recent years to win both the French/English 1000 Guineas.

Following her racing career, Miesque proved equally prolific at stud. Not only did she produce five stakes winners, but they included two classic winners and a Breeders Cup sire.

Kingmambo

Miesque’s son Kingmambo, winner of the French 2000 Guineas, very quickly established himself as one a top sires, and he is also regarded as one of Mr Prospector’s leading sire sons.

The sire of 76 stakes winners, Kingmambo is one of the rare stallions whose stock excel all over the world. He has sired champions in all of Britain, France, Germany, Japan and USA.
An official chef-de-race, Kingmambo is also the broodmare sire of the last two Investec Derby winners – Camelot and Ruler of the World. He is the sire of 22 individual G1 winners including champions El Condor Pasa, Henrythenavigator, King Kamehameha, Russian Rhythm, Rule of Law and leading sire Lemon Drop Kid.

Miesque’s other classic winner, and second foal, was East of The Moon – one of 25 fillies who won both the French 1000 Guineas and French Oaks. The daughter of Private Account is also a proven stakes producer having produced G3 winner Moon Driver, sire Mojave Moon and Canda (dam of G3 winner and sire Evasive).

Miesque, whose daughters bred such notables as G1 winning fillies Rumplestiltskin and Amanee, also produced Miesque’s Son, a full brother to Kingmambo, who sired Eclipse Champion and Breeders Cup Mile hero Miesque’s Approval. Prior to retiring to stud in South Africa,  Miesque’s Approval won 12 races and over $2 000 000.

Nureyev

Miesque was the best daughter of Nureyev, a fertility plagued stallion whose stats placed him as one of history’s very finest stallions. Not only was Nureyev a great sire, but he was a versatile one, who sired champion sprinters (Stravinsky) and mile and a half horses (Reams of Verse, Theatrical) alike.

Nureyev is also one of the very best broodmare sires of recent times, with his daughters having produced a staggering 207 stakes winners – of which 31 were Grade One winners. He is not only the damsire of world leading sires Zabeel and Kingmambo, but also the very promising young stallion Tamayuz.

Another horse, produced by a Nureyev mare, was dual Irish classic winner Desert King – sire of the legendary Australian champion Makybe Diva.

Standing at Varsfontein Stud, Judpot is an exceptional young sire – with bloodlines to match.
