A very disappointed Mr Dennis Drier confirmed to the Sporting Post that his star colt, Master Of My Fate, suffered a tendon injury earlier this week. Veterinary opinion is that the injury is too severe for the horse to return to racing and the decision has been taken to retire him.
“It happened on Tuesday morning, but we couldn’t make a public statement until it had been discussed with the owners. He was having his last pipe opener on the sand in preparation for tomorrow’s race and must have put a foot wrong, because we have never had a single problem with him and there were no indications that anything was amiss beforehand. It’s a big, big shock to all and the stable is obviously in doom and gloom, but what can you do?” said Mr Drier.
Fortunately there is a small silver lining in that the beautiful and imposing colt can still be saved for stud. “The great pity of course is that he’s never won a Gr1, but everyone who watched the Met saw the interference he had in the first 300m and we all know how desperately unlucky he was. There have been a number of inquiries about him already, but there are no immediate plans at this stage and the owners will have the final say. It’s a great loss and tragedy to the yard and to the owners, but also for all the supporters out there.”
Master Of My Fate is by Jet Master out of the brilliant six time winning Elliodor mare, Promisefrommyheart and was bred by Varsfontein Stud. Master Of My Fate was the top priced colt of the 2011 National Yearling Sale and was knocked down to the late Andrew Papageorgiou for R3 million.
The colt campaigned over 2 seasons for a total of 8 starts, 6 wins (including the Gr2 Premier Trophy and the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap) and 2 places for a total of R705,700 in earnings.
