Full Throttle! Aldo Domeyer steers Maximum Jet to a surprise win over the favourite in the Stormsvlei Mile (Equine Edge)

Paddy Kruyer produced Maximum Jet in fighting trim to win the R125 000 Listed Stormsvlei Mile run at Kenilworth on Saturday. The daughter of Jet Master upset the favourite Captainofmysoul under a powerful ride by Aldo Domeyer, in a generally unpopular victory for most punters.

While the former jockey Paddy Kruyer was the toast of the family (it helps when your wife owns the winner!), jockey Gavin Lerena, who rode the beaten odds on favourite, was left to reflect upon a blank day at the office.

Lerena travelled to Cape Town for the Snaiths and had ten blank rides to his credit when he flew out of Cape Town.

While we are not blaming him for the defeat, his casual body language as he sidled up on the rail on the favourite, met with disapproval from punters. Alternatively it may well be that Captainofmysoul is just not as good as we or the handicapper thought she was.

She certainly had every chance as she was tucked in a few lengths off as Glen Hatt made the pace on her stablemate Count To Ten.

Luna De Victoria ran along in second ahead of the favourite, with Maximum Jet and Butterfly Girl further back. Andrew Fortune was hard at work keeping Girl’s Best Friend interested at the rear.

Into the straight Captainofmysoul glided through on the rail and appeared to be going very well as Domeyer got to work on Maximum Jet. Into the final 200m it was apparent who was going the better and the Kruyer filly ran on strongly.

Smart Colleen charged through at 29 to 1 to finish a half length further back in third. The second of the Snaith runners, Count To Ten, stayed on after making the pace to run fourth.

Maximum Jet won by a head in a time of 102,93 secs. There was some shrewd money for her as she had been backed from 22 to 1 into 7 to 1.

Girl’s Best Friend ran a rather disappointing last.

Maximum Jet, who races in the silks of Sharon Kruyer, was bred by the legendary Terrance Millard and is by Jet Master out of the four  time winning Candy Stripes mare, Capa Maxi. The latter won up to 2000m.

Maximum Jet has now won 3 races with 3 places from 8 starts.

She took her earnings to R182 775 with this win.
