Newsflash: Tote Meltdown

'When technology goes wrong, it goes wrong' - Hawkins

broken_computerA power failure in Johannesburg is believed to be behind a total Tab blackout that occurred at or around the start of the Greyville sixth race on Friday evening.

Punters were unable to access their betting accounts on Satote and there was no tote betting facilities on the seventh race.

Results remained outstanding for some time.

Gold Circle Racing Executive Graeme Hawkins explained that the generators had not kicked in and their computers were not talking to Phumelela’s.

He said that no winning tickets would be cashed until further notice and until the systems were up and running.

The last race at Greyville would go ahead regardless.

The blackout has come on the eve of one of South Africa’s major racedays at Kenilworth on Saturday and the impact of such an occurrence on a major betting day would be devastating.

We await a press release from the relevant authority.
