On the grand scale of things, the annual Ready-to-Run sale for 2yo’s is as good as it gets.
For two years in a row, the sale has produced Equus champions. Sale graduates have an opportunity to compete for a prize of R2 million early in their 3yo career – the third richest race in the land and there only are 185 tickets in the draw.
A filly and colt by Dynasty made top prices at the National 2yo sale where the average prices for colts and fillies were down, but median prices showed that the middle and lower end of the market recovered from last year’s drop.

Sold in August 2009 for R80k, just under the overall sale average for colts, the son of Mogok stands every chance to collect Equus Champion 3yo Colt honours. That’s apart from the multiple Gr1 winner’s current earnings, which stand at a solid R1.6 million. And he’s not alone.
Back to its traditional date in Vodacom July week, the KZN yearling sale has a new home, the Suncoast Casino, on the Durban beach front. All you need is an eye for a Horse (with capital H) and a bit of Luck (the spin of the wheel), as the connections of the most recent eye-catchers Seal and Variometer will readily admit.

The ever popular Shongweni Ready To Run and Horses In Training Sale will be held at the Shongweni Polo Grounds in KZN on Wednesday 23rd February. As always run under the auspices of Michael Holmes Bloodstock, the sale commences at 10.30 a.m. and features 200 entries, no fewer of them 95 unraced two-year-olds.
