Lot 383: Galileo (IRE) / Alluring Park (IRE)
A Galileo full sister to 2012 Epsom Oaks (Eng-I) winner Was sold for 5 million guineas ($8,443,575 in United States funds) on Wednesday at the Tattersalls October yearling sale in Newmarket, setting a world record price for a yearling filly and smashing the European record price for an auction yearling set the previous day at the sale.
Bidding out of Book 1 on behalf of Sheikh Joaan al Thani’s Al Shaqab Racing, Nicolas de Watrigant’s Mandore International outbid Coolmore’s John Magnier to acquire the regally-bred filly offered by breeder Lodge Park Stud. The Irish-bred is out of stakes-placed Alluring Park, by Green Desert.
Was captured the 2012 Investec Epsom Oaks (Eng-I). The filly’s second dam, Park Express, was a champion in England and Ireland.
Alluring Park is a half sister to European champion and sire New Approach, also by leading sire Galileo, and a full sister to Japanese group I winner and sire Shinko Forest. She also is the dam of stakes winner Janood, by Medicean.
The previous world-record price for a yearling filly came out of Book 1 at 2007 Tattersalls October yearling sale. Bloodstock agent Charles Gordon-Watson, on behalf of mobile phone executive Craig Bennett, went to 2,500,000 guineas ($5,333,213) for a daughter of Sadler’s Wells out of the Irish River mare Brigid. The filly, named Liffey Dancer, is a full sister to group I winner Listen.
Offspring from the mating of Galileo and Alluring Park have been hot commodities at Tattersalls. Was topped the 2010 sale at 1.2 million guineas ($1,994,958), and Al Jassasiyah sold to Mandore International for the second-highest price of 1.5 million guineas ($2,403,750) last year.
Racing Post reported the record-breaking Galieo filly will join Andre Fabre in France. Only three days ago, Sheikh Joaan enjoyed a spectacular victory in the Arc with Treve.
“How can you quantify her beauty?” said de Watrigant told Racing Post about the Galileo filly. “She’s magnificent. You know, you see her walking in the ring among the others and she’s different. We didn’t expect to have to go so far, but she has everything going for her. Hopefully she’s another Treve!”
The session’s average price of 226,509 guineas ($382,509) increased 26.7% from last year’s corresponding session.
Median price was up 24.4% to 140,000 guineas ($236,420), while the day’s total receipts of 24,916,000 guineas ($42,076,602) were comparable with last year, despite a 22 fewer horses offered.
The clearance rate slid to 74.8%, compared with 82.8% at the same session in 2012.
Earlier in the day another horse sold for seven-figures when Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Shadwell Estate Co. went to 1.1 million guineas ($1,857,587) for a full brother to 2010 Darley Prix Morney (Fr-I) winner Arcano.
The Oasis Dream colt, offered by Ireland’s Corduff Stud, is out of the unraced Daylami mare Tariysha. Notable members of the family include 2010 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp (Fr-I) winner Gilt Edge Girl and English group II winner Godfrey Street.
Corduff Stud bred the colt in partnership with Yellow Bird Syndicate.
Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony commented on the record-priced Galileo filly:
“Regally bred and the most outstanding individual, she is a filly who has absolutely everything. The Burns family have sold so many magnificent yearlings at Tattersalls and she is the ultimate tribute to three generations of outstanding horsemanship. We are delighted for the whole Lodge Park team and the filly’s new owner Sheikh Joaan.”
The Book 1 portion of the Tattersalls October yearling sale continues Oct. 10 with the third and final session. The sale’s four-day Book 2 sale starts Oct. 14, followed by a single Book 3 session Oct. 18.
